Nov 28, 2015 | Football
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Leonard Fournette ran for 159 yards and a touchdown and LSU beat Texas A&M 19-7 on Saturday night.
Derruis Guice had a 50-yard touchdown run and 75-yard kickoff return for LSU (8-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference), which ended a three-game skid.
Fournette's performance gave him LSU's single-season rushing record at 1,741 yards, surpassing the mark of 1,686 yards set by Charles Alexander in 1977.
Kyle Allen passed for 161 yards and one touchdown for the Aggies (8-4, 4-4), but had a pass intercepted by Donte Jackson inside the final 2 minutes, all but sealing LSU's victory.
TEAM/GAME NOTES
• The Aggies closed out the 2015 regular season with a 8-4 overall record and 4-4 mark against the Southeastern Conference.
• Texas A&M is already bowl-eligible for the seventh straight season and will learn its bowl destination on Dec. 6.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
• True freshman RB/RS Christian Kirk gained 130 all-purpose yards against the Tigers as he broke the old freshman single season record of 1,542 set by Cyrus Gray in 2008.
• Kirk raised his season total to 1,659, which ranks No. 5 overall in school history behind only Cyrus Gray(1,806, 2010), Darren Lewis (1,739 in 1990 and 1,705 in 1988) and Leeland McElroy (1,709 in 1995).
• Kirk took down the freshman mark on a weaving 31-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter.
• Senior RB Tra Carson joined an elite club of Aggies who have rushed for 1,000 yards in a single season. He was the 11th Aggie to reach 1,000 and the first since QB Johnny Manziel had 1,410 in 2012. Carson is the first RB to hit 1,000 since Gray had 1,045 in 2011.
• After tonight's 19-carry, 69-yard effort, Carson is 31 rushing yards away from becoming the 19th Aggie with 2,000 career rushing yards in program history.
• Kirk needs 65 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the season, which would give Texas A&M a 1,000-yard rusher and receiver in the same season for the fourth time in school history.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
• True freshman LB Richard Moore continued to make a huge impact since making his playing debut in game 6 vs. Alabama. The 6-foot-0, 215-pound Moore logged the first double-digit game of his career with 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss and a QB hurry.
• Posting a game-high and career-high 13 was junior LB Shaan Washington from Alexandria, La. He also chipped in 1.5 tackles for loss.
• Sophomore DE Myles Garrett, a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award, logged a sack to bring his season total to 11.5. He also has 1.5 tackles for loss to bring his season total to 18.5.
• Junior safety Justin Evans logged his first career interception with a third-quarter pickoff of LSU QB Brandon Harris.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES
• Senior P Drew Kaser continued his quest to break the NCAA FBS record for career punt average (minimum of 150 punts). Kaser averaged a whopping 52.0 yards on six punts against the Tigers.
• Including tonight's game, Kaser drew to within .01 of the NCAA record of 46.31 set by West Virginia's Todd Sauerbrun from 1991-94. Kaser will enter the bowl game with a career average of 46.30 (7,455 yards on 161 punts).
MISCELLANEOUS
• Game captains were OC Mike Matthews, RT Germain Ifedi, DE Myles Garrett and 12th Man Sam Moeller. LSU won the toss and defers their choice to the second half. The Aggies received the opening kickoff.
• Moeller was the Aggies' 12th Man for the 38th straight game, which is a school record.
