Training Camp: Day 7
Aug 17, 2015 | Football
Texas A&M opened week two of training camp with its first two-a-day practice. The Aggies did primarily individual workouts, combined with two-minute drill, in the morning, followed by a two-and-a-half hour practice in full pads in the evening.
A summary of Coach Sumlin's thoughts are posted below.

Kevin Sumlin Press Conference (summary) - 8.17.15
Scrimmage. Went 86 plays not counting kicking or penalties. Most of the 105 got to play. Just an evaluation-type setting. It was a live scrimmage. I was happy with some of the progress of a lot of different people. Learning experience for the young guys. Some of the older guys you can see where they improved and who's stepping up and making strides over course of the last year. Good performances. Lot of great video able to look at. Scrimmage where video will be really helpful with new scheme on both sides. Guys can see what they need to do and come back out and work twice today. Thought we had better understanding of where we are. So it was beneficial.
Play of the quarterbacks. It was good. All three of them got snaps. Kyle Allen had snaps early. Kyler Murray went with the 2s. Just about halfway through Kyler went with the 1s and Jake Hubenak with 2s and 3s. They got plenty of reps out of that number. We can get some evaluations on the two new guys and see where Kyle has progressed over the last year. Getting plenty of practice and plenty of reps during practice. Those live situations—will have another Wednesday night and one Saturday—will just keep evaluating.
Are QBs work in progress. They all are. We're not just talking about QBs. Myles Garrett is a work in progress right now. People forget he's a 2nd year player. Everyone out there has something they can improve on. With Saturday we really had couple goals. Wanted to see guys play hard and with effort, and be smart in how they played and be physical. We can work from that. Guys who played hard were rewarded. Guys who didn't play to a standard were reminded today about how they need to play around here. That goes for the whole team. You talk about the quarterbacks and their development--they need to do that but a lot on this team need to get better.
Impressive outings this weekend. Usual suspects played pretty well, which we expect. Get concerned when guys who haven't played well in past don't play well right off the bat. Our back end in the secondary has looked very, very fast. Seem to be in the right place and communicating. Got to communicate a little better but that will come in the next few weeks. Armani Watts probably playing as good as he's played. If can be more consistent than he was last year can be an all-league player for us. Has played enough big games for us he understands his weaknesses. Really worked hard in the offseason to try and develop not only physically but mentally. Brandon Williams did pretty good. He's a work in progress. Off top of head receivers had really good effort. Josh Reynolds and Speedy Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones and Christian Kirk. High expectations for those guys and Saturday they didn't disappoint.
Linebackers and how they are coming along. Fortunate that we had freshmen who played last year. We'll see where AJ Hilliard fits in. Taking it slow with him. Between ankle and wrist, taking it easy with him. Trying to get him back in flow of things. Pleased with them. Had meeting the other day, the three young guys have really caught on. Summer has really helped them. Richard Moore being here in spring has really helped him. Runs very well. Guy who will help us in special teams. Riley Garner is 230 now and really, really athletic. Played pretty well Saturday. He's a guy that can help us I think special teams wise. I think all those young linebackers have done very well. Justin Dunning played pretty well, had an interception. Our roster is different (this year). We are thin in a couple of spots but we don't have huge holes in it. Guys are really pushing the older guys for playing time and will really strengthen our special teams.
Plan to practice Saturday on Kyle Field. It'll be good. Looking forward to it. Going to try to arrange a private tour. Don't know if we have 105 (construction) helmets. I just want our players and coaches to get up on the concourse and walk around, upper deck, see some of suites and see some things. Take for granted that they have seen it. Usually just see tunnel and field only.
Injuries. Not going to say anything about injuries.
Today was first two-a-day workout. Dragging a little bit today. We're in week 2 also. Coming off scrimmage. Had meetings yesterday but no practice. Introduced 2-minute today. That can be a stressful situation. Lot of running in the morning, come back tonight with full pads about 2 ½ hours. For some guys it's the first time they've done that.
Feelings about new offensive lineman development. Good. Got Keaton Sutherland who benefits from being here. Probably the most ready out of the young guys. Erik McCoy is going to be really, really good player down the line. Got real good demeanor and grasp of what we are doing. Big body, strong and tough. They are really pushing to get on the bus.
