Mark Hagen - press conference summary:
Thoughts on your group during camp. Practicing hard. Good group. Little more depth than we've had in a couple years. Wily veterans in there with Alonzo Williams and Julien Obioha. Nice to have older guys lead the way and set the tempo on daily basis. Fairly deep, probably 8 healthy bodies for most part. Some banged up right now. At full strength have about 8 that can go in and help us. Two guys in theory shouldn't have to play 60, 70, 80 plays. Should be able to roll guys in there and keep fresh.
Julien Obioha's progress. Real smart. Program guy. Smart all around. Grown, gotten bigger and stronger as career evolved. Not pure pass rusher. Julien's skill set he realized early on in spring practice he's built more as a physical guy. Seemed better fit for him to move inside. We asked him to move in spring. Better fit for him. Has worked out real well. About 280 when he started camp. Doing a good job keeping body weight up there. He's a technician. Physical guy. Put on some muscle and weight. Gives us explosiveness and athleticism inside. Been good move so far. Hope he doesn't have to go play 60, 70, 80 snaps. We have people around him who can go in and spell him. Coach Chavis likes to play 4, 5, 6 defensive tackles. Keeps more guys involved, chomping at the bit to have a chance to play on Saturday. And at end of the day keeps guys fresh. Has you playing better in the fourth quarter.
Daylon Mack. Very talented. Work in progress so far, as is for all our freshmen who come in to this type of setting. We go fast in practice too. Had flashes of real great play. Had times catching his breath. Had ups and downs but certainly very, very talented. Got to keep getting him into game shape. We're moving lot of pieces around with our guys. Will see Julien with Alonzo, that's been our #1 group for the most part. Will roll others in with the 1s, including Daylon, just to keep moving those parts around. So far so good. Guys are working hard. Seeing a lot of guys stepping up.
Alonzo Williams. Came in as defensive end. Growing into an SEC-size defensive tackle. Has played a lot of football. Takes a lot of pride in his game. Learning how to play in an attack scheme. Very prideful football player. Keeps getting better every year. Dead set on having best season this year. Nice for me as coach to have guys like he and Julien coach the young guys on the side.
Chavis keeping staff intact and the confidence that shows in y'all. Obviously great to still be here and part of a great university and great program. Was great to be here during signing day and keep rolling with things. Being part of Chavis' staff is a lot of fun. His reputation speaks for himself. Great with us from day one. Includes us in thoughts for the day and game-planning and practice planning. We've been like sponges learning from him. Been great being with Chief.
Being back on defensive front. Very fun, very smooth. Coached up front 14-15 years. Was seamless. Looking at SEC it is a lineman's conference. So thought process I think was to get 2 sets of eyes up front instead of one and get a little more detailed coaching and if that can help us win games let's go for it.
Terry Price press conference summary:
Defensive ends so far. Been good so far. Got to work hard to play that position. Young, young group. Got 3 sophomores and a junior, really, comprising the bulk of group. Still learning and young but pushing every day to get better.
Development of Daeshon Hall. Young man who just had first offseason. Means a lot in football. Finally put on good weight, good strength and bought into what we asked him to do. Skill set fits exactly what we want to do. Excited to see what he does this season. Think he'll do some good things for us.
How deep on outside. Love to have 8 (like defensive tackles), but we play with guys we got. Not biggest group I've ever had by any means, but will play hard and play this season well and work hard as they can to make plays for us. Like to be a little deeper obviously but kind of where we are right now.
Cross training guys, moving from outside to inside. Yeah (we are doing that). Did that in spring and did some today. Julien Obioha is a guy smart enough, he knows whole front 7. Could put him at middle linebacker that's how smart he is. Skill set as big as he is now is more suited for inside position. Will be some games where we may need him outside to be more of an anchor for us.
Daeshon and his importance to Myles Garrett's success. Every team has to have two. I've been in the SEC 20 years. Can find a way to block a guy if he's that good. But if you have sufficient speed coming off both edges that makes big, big difference for you. Good thing for Myles and rest of our crew is we have good speed across the board. Got to keep developing and getting better.
Qualen Cunningham's progress. Started off camp just doing okay. Came on Saturday. Had a really good day. Thought that was his best day of camp, in the scrimmage. Playing faster, gotten a little stronger. 3 of these guys were true freshmen last year. Proud of where he's come and improvements he's made. Done good things for us during two-a-days.
Being able to stay at A&M with Chavis hire. This is my heart. This is my life. Everything I have in life I owe to Texas A&M University. Having opportunity to coach here has been unbelievable to me and my family. Because of what this school has done for me I have opportunity to have best job I could have, coaching defensive line at Texas A&M.
How Myles is better now than last year at this time. Stronger. Healthier. Doing better job at point of attack. Hand placement. Toward end of last year people started running at him. Have to be able to handle all blocks. He's worked hard at it. Was handicapped second half of last year because of big cast. But now that thing is off. Done a better job at point of attack.
Vocal leaders. Myles. Needed him to be try and be more of a leader. Taken on that role. Don't just become a leader overnight. This 2-a-days he's worked hard to not just lead defensive line but lead the team. Because of that we'll be better.
