COLLEGE STATION— Jim Turner, a veteran coach is returning to Aggieland to serve a second hitch with the Aggies as the offensive line coach, Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin announced today.
"Jim Turner is one of the top offensive line coaches in the country and when you watch his units, they are excellent technicians and tough," Sumlin said. "He is also an excellent evaluator of talent and recruiter."
Turner served as offensive line coach at Texas A&M from 2008-11. The 2011 offensive unit ranked in the Top 25 in total offense (No. 7), scoring offense (No. 11), passing offense (No. 18) and rushing offense (No. 24) and the offensive line allowed nine quarterback sacks in 13 games.
"I am excited about the opportunity to return to Aggieland and to work with Coach Sumlin, Coach Mazzone and the entire staff," Turner said.
Among his Aggie pupils were NFL players Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews and Patrick Lewis.
"Coach Turner was one of the big reasons I chose Texas A&M," Joeckel, a 2013 NFL first-round pick and second overall selection in the draft, said. "He expected the best out of you every day—in the film room, the practice field and in the game. He is a great technician and we have stayed in touch. I am very excited he is back at Texas A&M."
"It is very exciting to see Coach Turner leading the offensive line in Aggieland again," Lewis, just finishing his third season in the NFL and currently with the Seattle Seahawks, said, "I'm excited because he loves College Station and he is a great teacher. I learned a lot from him that has carried over to the NFL. I know those Aggie offensive linemen will have an awesome experience playing for him."
Mike Evans, a first-round NFL draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was more of a basketball player at Galveston Ball High School, but Coach Turner saw a great football prospect.
"If it weren't for Coach Turner, I would probably be playing basketball," Mike Evans, former Texas A&M wide receiver and first-round NFL draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said. "Coach Turner thought I could play wide receiver and I am glad he recruited me to Texas A&M."
Turner was recently hired by the University of Cincinnati to coach running backs after he spent a year in private business.
When Turner left Texas A&M, he served as offensive line coach in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins (2012-13).
Prior to coming to Aggieland the first time, Turner coached offensive line at his alma mater of Boston College in 2007. Before serving in Chestnut Hill, Turner worked two seasons (2005-06) as offensive line coach at the University of Delaware. In 2006, Turner was assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Fightin' Blue Hens.
Turner's background includes stops at Temple in 2003-04 as the offensive line coach as well as three years (2000-02) at Cambridge, Massachusetts, as the offensive line and run game coordinator for Harvard.
Turner spent one season in Ruston, Louisiana, as the offensive line coach for Louisiana Tech in 1999. The offensive line allowed only 18 sacks in 566 pass attempts.
From 1994 through 1998, Turner coached at Northeastern University in Boston working with the offensive line and tight ends in 1994-95, before switching to running backs and special teams in 1996, and ending his tenure there as the defensive line and special teams in 1997 and 1998.
A native of Braintree, Massachusetts, Turner was a three-year letterman for Coach Jack Bicknell at Boston College as a fullback. He played in three bowl games, the Liberty, Cotton and Hall of Fame. His senior season he was named a team captain.
After earning his degree in sociology in 1988 from Boston College, Turner began his coaching career at his high school alma mater of Braintree. He spent the 1989 season in London, England, as the offensive coordinator of the Kent Rams before serving in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry officer in Europe, the Middle East and Japan from 1990-94.
Turner is married and his wife's name is Patricia. They have one son, Michael.
