Texas A&M Football 2016 Signing Class
Feb 03, 2016 | Football
Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin announced the signing of 21 student-athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday.
The Class of 2016 is listed below, along with a summary of comments from Coach Sumlin's press conference.
It was a good day today for a lot of future Aggies. Guys that joined our football team and our University. A lot of smiling faces, a lot of happy parents, a lot of happy young men. I think it's a very solid class. You look across at the numbers--12 guys on offense, 7 on defense and a couple of really, really good athletic guys that play a number of positions in Moses Reynolds and Aaron Hansford. Along with another one of the top punter/kickers in the country from right down the road. Filled a lot of needs today with guys that we have needed. I think a lot gets said about national signing day for players that as some people refer to it 'play the hat game'. But there's a lot to be said for that core of our guys that have been committed that really didn't get the hoopla that some got today. Made up their minds, stuck with what they were doing and really helped recruit this class. Guys we're looking forward to getting here. We'll see them the first day of summer school, Tuesday, May 31. Will start spring football on February 29. Will go a week, take spring break, and have our first spring game in about 3 years on April 9. It will be back in Kyle Field. This is really a springboard today. Coaches will take the next couple days off and will be back in the office Monday with preparation to start spring football.
What are you getting with quarterback Nick Starkel and how important was it to get both him and Trevor Knight?
I count Trevor in this class and as probably the most important recruit. We secured him right after the bowl game. Trevor Knight is a young man--a man at this point--that has graduated and has enrolled in the Mays Business grad school. Was MVP of the Sugar Bowl. Has been on big stages and won big games. Brings experience, brings stabilizing factor, brings competitive nature to the position along with Jake (Hubenak). We felt like Nick Starkel was a great fit for us. When we started talking with Nick he was pretty loosely committed to another university. We explained situation with him. Think he's a guy who has tremendous upside. Tall guy, rangy guy that's going to need to put on a little weight and some strength but has the mechanics and tools. A strong-arm guy who can come in and help us. Perfect situation for him, to be able to come in as a young guy behind a couple of older guys and really learn what to do, be in the system, grow in the program and have his opportunity down the road maybe next year at this time to compete to start. Good fit for him and a good fit for us.
Do you like the dynamic you'll have now in the quarterback room?
Sure. He understands his role coming in, a guy who doesn't have to play right now. Has the opportunity to get into a system, learn it and be able to develop physically and mentally with a couple older guys who will shoulder the load.
Is Aaron Hansford a guy who could play both sides, and where do you see him fitting?
We've got coaches upstairs arguing about him already. I'll have to settle that early. Coach Mazzone gets first dibs on him because he knew him first and recruited him. He's the guy who recruits him, he gets to pick. (Aaron is) going to be on offense. A guy who has tremendous upside. Athletic. Can play a number of positions for us. Big, physical, fast. Parents both colligate sprinters. He inherited that speed for a big, physical guy. Can play lot of different things. Thinking all our coaches are excited. See what happens when he gets here. He's probably 210, 215 right now, but will get to be 240 easily.
How did changing offensive coordinators affect offensive recruiting?
I don't know how much it changed recruiting. I think it kind of solidified some things. Didn't really affect us. Really had our five offensive linemen committed for a while. Think it was important, maybe most important for Nick Starkel as a quarterback, to know the direction you're going. And also it was important obviously for Aaron Hansford since (Mazzone) was recruiting him. Outside of that, the ability to sit down and say here's what we are doing here and here's what's going on…once that was settled it just was a calming effect in recruiting.
What did you tell recruits about the offense you'll be running?
Fairly obvious what we're doing. Watched a lot of UCLA video. Noel is a guy I've known for a long time. Worked together probably 20 something years ago. Veteran offensive coordinator, whether at Ole Miss, Auburn, as an NFL wide receiver coach and most recently at UCLA. Departure from what we did last year to what we're doing now is not a tremendous one. But the utilization of some bigger bodies, where we have Jordan Davis and Aaron Hansford, were keys. Recruiting those guys gives us an advantage with what we want to do offensively. Maybe will add more services to the blocking areas. Not that we didn't have a 1,200-yard rusher last year. We have to be more complete team. Have to be a team that's more efficient in passing game. For first time we have five running backs in spring football. Have more running backs in spring football this year than we did during the whole season last year. Have guys that can take turns at quarterback in a new system. People understand what Noel has been about and what he's done. Not drastic departure from where we've been but philosophically from a play-calling standpoint there are obviously some changes.
You've talked about closing the gap on the rest of the west in the SEC … talk about where this class stacks in the SEC West when it comes to talent…
Got to look at guys on your roster and guys coming in to the program. As I've said before, which has become a standard statement, the SEC is not just a talent league but a talent and depth league. And that has played out. Look at signing class today and look across the board at our football team, with this group of guys there's not one on here that you say man we've got to get him on the field right now. Really for the first time. Been able to redshirt some guys. Three of the four linebackers we signed last year played. Able to redshirt one of them. Got some depth there with Otaro Alaka coming back. He looks great. The year off and medical redshirt really has helped him. Defensively really for the first time they don't have to get on the field right now. Able to sign a complete class of offensive linemen. All five, really for the first time, with a center, guards and tackles. That's a good thing for us. Replenished some of the skill position guys. Got most skill guys back on the perimeter. For us this is a really, really good class. A solid class that has really good skill players and good speed. But more than anything it adds depth to this football team, which we need.
The DBs in this class look like they'd make a pretty good basketball team, is that build what Coach Chavis has in mind?
Start by looking at philosophy and body type. What we're looking for defensively, being a man team on the corner, are guys that are longer that can play man to man. Long arms, long legs, recovery skills, press technique. Look at these guys, true corners that we have, Charles Oliver is probably the prototype of what we're looking for. Long guy who can really, really run. Some of these other guys will be safety type guys. Clifford Chattman is a tremendous athlete, at probably 6-4 or 6-5. A national recruit. Might be a lower-rated guy but wasn't rated low by some pretty good football teams trying to recruit him. Tremendous upside. Long, rangy guy who will stay on the back end. Guys on this list who don't just fit into one piece. Guys that can grow into other things. As the program starts to grow you can do that without having specific positions for guys. Chief and Noel have shown ability to put guys in positions to be successful.
Anticipating signing any more guys?
We'll see.
Set on staff for spring?
We don't talk about staff stuff. Comment afterwards. Are things that happen all the time. Signing day there are always things going on across the country. No reason to talk about that – today is about these guys. Been a big day for them.
Moses Reynolds – where will he fit and any comparison to his brother (Josh)?
Hope so. Was a high school quarterback. We've eliminated that position. But he can play a lot of different positions. Wants to start on defense. Probably start playing safety. Broad shoulders. Only deal in house was Coach Moorehead made him promise mom not to take out 18 years of frustration on his brother during practice, because we need him for games. Tremendous athlete. High school quarterback. Been around the game. Haven't been able to have those body types readily available to move back and forth. Really will help us special teams. Got those 6-2 body types that over course of time turn into guys who can play a number of positions.
With the improvement defensively this year how much effect did that have on guys wanting to come to A&M?
I don't know. Last year we signed a pretty good defensive class also. Had a lot of guys play. I think we had the third most snaps in 2015 in our league. Tennessee was first, Georgia second, we were third. Had number of freshmen play a lot last year. Lot of those guys were the Daylon Macks, the Keke Kingsleys of the world. The linebackers. Really quality special teams players for us. Without a doubt able to make some strides to get into some homes and talk to some guys. Can't say that Chief's contacts and knowledge of Tennessee didn't get us two really good players. Tyrel Dodson is an impact player that was really solid for us in recruiting. Made his commitment, stuck with it as Mr. Football in Tennessee. Chief's made an impact from what we're looking for, as you brought up body types in the secondary but also his connections in Tennessee with the two really, really good players. Ikenna Okeke is possibly a nickel safety down guy. Two really good players from Tennessee.
Talk about what Trayveon Williams gives you and how big it is to get him for the spring…
Funny you brought him up. Just walking in here and he was in the locker room. Was players' day off. Coaches notice that. Says a lot about him. I am not shocked. In his eyes he plans on playing next year. Doing everything he can. Got a dynamic skill set. Completely different from what we've had. Add the guys we have on campus, Keith Ford – people have forgotten he's even here. Able to add two really good transfers last year – Priest Willis as a corner who started at UCLA and Keith Ford who was really fine player at Oklahoma. Those guys don't show up on this list but you add them to this class and you start to see the depth pile up real quick.
Elaborate on your philosophical approach…
We're not a high pressure operation in recruiting. Our coaches do a really great job of evaluating. Our philosophy with early commitments, a lot of times guys that are committed to us don't have rankings yet because they haven't come out. We're not out looking to see who's where and who's on what list. Going through our connections. Already had one junior day. For us the recruiting process is about us. We get our guys, get them on campus, we like to get the families on campus, the coaches, everybody. Like to present the information that we think sets us apart and makes us who we are, Texas A&M. Not a situation where we threaten people. We want them to go home and talk to family, talk to coaches and then call us and tell us that you want to be a part of this. Because of that we don't have a lot of decommitments. That philosophy has held up with our commitment style, with the nucleus of our class. Kind of sad that the guys who have gone through that process don't get as much fanfare as the guys who went through it today. When you're committed it's not like people still aren't recruiting you. Their loyalty and how they handled things is a tribute to them but also a tribute to how we do things.
Helps to have a good basketball team?
Helps to have a great basketball team. By the way, Billy (Kennedy) has done a fabulous job. Everyone on this campus is excited. You get in there (Reed), we've been there the last two Saturdays with recruiting visits and just what an atmosphere. Great place. Reed Arena is as loud as it's ever been. That needs to continue. What an effort these guys are giving. They're fun to watch.
We've heard about Trevor Knight on the field but we've also heard really positive things about him off the field…
He's a guy as college football goes is a grown man. Already earned degree. In grad school in the Mays School of Business. Is very, very strong in his faith. You see how certain guys just ooze leadership and he's all about that. Takes care of his business. Tremendous team guy. Tremendous leadership guy. First thing that strikes me is we got back here and his conversation level is a lot different than an 18 year old. His ability to rally guys when we are gone and the coaches can't be there…he's already had guys out throwing and catching. Basically a coach what do you need me to do attitude. Filling a void in leadership that we need right now. He's been that kind of guy. Talked to his high school coach. Obviously talked to Bob (Stoops) and Lincoln Riley. Always been that kind of guy. Fills a void that was needed in a lot of different ways.
