Jun 11, 2016 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Former Texas A&M standout Daniel Mengden made his MLB debut Saturday. The right-handed pitcher started for the Oakland Athletics against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
Mengden was the tough-luck loser in the 2-1 defeat. He allowed two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings.
The fourth-round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft became the 55th Aggie to make the Major Leagues. Originally selected by the Houston Astros, Mengden was dealt to Oakland as a part of a trade for pitcher Scott Kazmir.
Mengden has posted a 1.19 ERA this year between Oakland's AAA and AA affiliates, the Nashville Sounds and the Midland Rockhounds. In his 11 games started Mengden has gone 5-1 with 67 strikeouts.
The Houston native went 15-17 with a 3.20 ERA for the Maroon and White. He ranks 13th on Texas A&M's career strikeouts list with 230 and held opponents to a .235 batting average. As a sophomore, Mengden went 8-4 with a 2.11 ERA and had a .201 opponent batting average. He earned SEC All-Defensive Team honors in 2013 and was named to the SEC All-Tournament team.
Mengden joins Tyler Naquin and Ross Stripling as Aggies to make their MLB debut this season. Naquin made a pinch-hit appearance for the Cleveland Indians in the season opener on April 5. Stripling had a stellar first outing for the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 8. The three Aggies making their debut in 2016 are the first to make the Major Leagues since Michael Wacha on May 30, 2013, with Mengden being the 15th since 2000.
