MINNEAPOLIS – Texas A&M junior-to-be Bethany Galat was victorious in the 200-meter breaststroke to highlight the Aggies' strong day at the U.S. Open on Wednesday on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Galat, from Mishawaka, Ind., swam to victory in a lifetime best time of 2:24.34 to post a nearly three-second victory over the field. At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last month, Galat was third in the 200 breast and missed a berth on Team USA by just one spot.
Also in the Championship final of the 200 breaststroke, fellow Aggie juniors-to-be Esther Gonzalez and Franko Jonker placed sixth (2:29.31) and eighth (2:30.88), respectively.
Another Texas A&M junior-to-be, Lisa Bratton, won the consolation final of the 200-meter backstroke in a time of 2:11.89.
