Texas A&M met the media on Tuesday at the weekly football press conference inside the Kyle Field Media Center.
The Aggies (1-0) face Prairie View A&M (1-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Summarized comments from Coach Sumlin and the coordinators are posted below, as well as audio and video files.
Evaluate Erik McCoy's start after watching the tape…
Work in progress. Talked about him just about every week in fall camp. Benefitted from last year, redshirted but traveled every game. Mike Matthews' backup. Didn't know if he'd have to step in and play. Guys in redshirt seasons have 2 scenarios. Got the guy that's just running the other team's offense and not traveling. Got the guy who's a fringe guy, who may or may not play. Then you've got the guy who's an immediate backup plan, who you want to try and redshirt if you've got a quality player ahead of him. Mentally was with the twos all last year. He was told and he knew if Mike went down he was our next best chance to win. Mental prep during week was different. Sideline demeanor different. Instead of being fan you're watching what's going on in case you need to go in. Talented young man. To do that in first start and he had death in family early that week. Grandfather who he was very close to passed away early in week. Visited with him Monday night and able to get him back home. Told him was up to him how he wanted to handle week. He said no, I want to play, it's my first start and it's kyle field and that's what he would have liked. Went home Thursday night after practice. At visitation and funeral Friday. Got back Friday night with team. Team welcomed him back. That's other part that you don't see. Difficult for any young man or grown person for that matter. To perform way he did Saturday says a lot about him as person.
Update on Avery Gennesy and how he's doing.
Will be available, yes. Cramped during game. Wasn't anything serious. He'll be fine. Gave us opportunity to get Koda Martin in there. Now have flexibility of him playing right and left tackle. Got real game experience now. Didn't want to do that, but with Jermaine Eluemunor at right tackle, now we have some flexibility with Koda. Learned some things, the kind of things you only learn during game. Jermaine, his move to tackle wasn't indictment on Koda not being good player. Was statement of how good Jermaine was playing. Thought Saturday Jermaine played pretty well. Didn't give up any sacks. Koda is still a fine football player.
Looking at 4th quarter how can you use as learning experience…
Played pretty well for 3 quarters. Think we got ahead up 24-9 and everyone relaxed. Quality football teams can make you pay. Think you saw that this weekend. Even with that, team showed discipline and courage at end of game to regroup. Finished the game. Saw many examples this weekend of some teams losing leads and still winning, and some teams that just can't get it back. Says a lot about where these guys are. On other hand no sugarcoating it with our guys. Have to close out games. Finish games. Got to get more out of our backup guys in critical games like that. Got to find more guys to keep guys fresher in certain positions. Got to do some things offensively to help ourselves. We learned a lot more about Trevor, he learned lot more about himself. Our run-pass option concepts were things when we came out in 3rd quarter we executed those very well with a loaded box. We learn from things, we learn from our team. Learned from clock situation at end. Our team learned a little bit more. We were at midfield, 4th and short, and it was little bit of change. In past we'd have gone for it. Punted ball, executed it, down at 3-yard line--couldn't be any better—and they go 97 yards. That's been our message to team. Team game. Offense, defense, special teams. Have those situations happen and they got back in game. We should have been able to close it out at that point. Probably biggest teaching point from Saturday.
Evaluation of running backs after watching film and Keith Ford's status.
Was in on last play of game. Good to go. He's fine. Told you before, got depth there. Had two others that didn't play. James White only had 2 carries. Will be a little bit like that. He's had great camp, but way other two were playing it was hard to take them off field. More of a hot hands situation. That will extend all guys' freshness and hopefully competitiveness during week. To get 30-something carries out of the running backs and not have one guy carrying it 25 to 30 times, it's different. Keith, the way he runs, he doesn't need to run it 30 times. He's a battering ram out there. Trayveon Williams is different. James White is a combination of both. Our offense is comfortable with that. Change of pace is good. Haven't played Kendall Bussey. He had great fall. So did Kwame Etwi. Guys who are quality running backs. Helped our running game to keep fresh people in there.
With all the upsets in college football, not taking Prairie View lightly right?
No. we're not. Don't take any of these games lightly. Starts with us in games like this. Things we have to get better. One of those things is like I said for whatever reason the focus. Tell you something else. All these upsets seem to happen in early games, 11:00 games. Notice that? Different times for different teams. Teams like us are used to playing later in day or at night. Different for everybody. This whole change of scenario even though it seems minor is not. Will challenge the focus of our guys.
How pleased with defensive tackle rotation and linebacker spot's ability to slow down run?
Hardreck Walker had his ups and downs. Hurt during camp but came back. Gave us a rotation with Keke (Kinglsey), Daylon (Mack) and Zaycoven (Henderson). Zaycoven expends lot of energy. Has to save energy for the game. I'm excited he's excited to play. Want him to be excited for game time not two hours before game. May be different this week since it'll be 9 a.m. Rotation was good in there. Were rotating them first series of the game. Also getting Qualen Cunningham and Jarrett Johnson out there and getting Myles and (Daeshon Hall) off the field. Or, having one of those guys off the field. James Lockhart is a really good run defender. Strong guy. Got rotation there at end too. Two deep of pretty quality players. Does nothing but help you. Linebacker, Shaan (Washington) and (Otaro) Alaka were as advertised. Steady during game. Got Claude George in there little bit. Foolish penalty. Got to think. Can't do that. But he's an aggressive guy. Made plays for us. (Tyrel) Dodson got in there did some things. Got a little wide-eyed. Game speed is different, particularly against team like UCLA. Things happening fast out there. Could tell early on in special teams, their whole secondary was starting on special teams. They had their best guys out there covering kicks. For Tyrel, covering kicks later in game was at different speed for him. Great learning experience for those guys.
Warn team against putting stock in early wins?
I haven't put any stock in this. But don't get me wrong that's a good football team we played. 4 of 5 years we've opened with top 25 teams. We don't take winning for granted but in grand scheme of things we have another game this week. We're moving on.
What do you expect with return of Speedy Noil?
Expect him to pick up where he left off during fall camp. Met with him before game week and told him he'd earned starting spot, but because he was not available for game against UCLA we'd have to cut his reps and move him back and make sure (Damion) Ratley and the backups got the reps for this week with Trevor. For all of fall camp Speedy was fantastic as teammate, with his effort and with everything he's done. Didn't want that to drop off last week. Would expect for him to show up and go back to work which he did yesterday. Was best fall camp he's had. For him it's consistency in his actions. Has as much talent as anybody. Been better than a lot of people in high school. Played quarterback. Worked really, really diligently in offseason to understand positon (wide receiver). Will be excited to play Saturday.
Prairie View defensively brings lot of heat from all different directions. How will you prepare for that?
Watch video. They do lot of different things defensively. Give us different looks and blitzes and scenarios with overloads and safeties and all kinds of exotic stuff. Will be good for our guys to try and ID those things. More than just QB too. Offensive line. People have to be on same page. Started preparing yesterday. Other thing is they're leading scoring team in FCS. Averaged 45 or so a game last year. These guys went up and down field on everyone they played last year. Willie Simmons has done great job there. Aggressive defense and leading scoring team last year in country at that level. Things we've seen on film get your attention. This will be about our guys maintaining focus, waking up Saturday morning, understanding the challenges, focusing, growing up bit and we'll see where we are.
Excited about win. Don't take win for granted. Better never take it for granted. Defensively we played well for 3 quarters. Didn't play kind of football needed to in fourth quarter. Got to get that fixed. Showed people we're capable of playing well but have to do that for 60 minutes. Positive is we got put in stressful situation and our guys responded well enough for us to get the win and that's important. Lot of plusses and minuses when look at film. Areas we need to improve and get better. Going to see different style of offense this week. Lot more fast-paced. Work against our offense, and no one goes faster than they do, so we'll be prepared and looking forward to it. Really proud of our effort. Guys played extremely hard. Have to play smarter. Wasn't anything happened in game that we can't fix. Didn't get beat in terms of physicality somewhere. Got good enough players to get it done. Have to get things fixed if we want to move forward. One step at a time. Got to keep improving. Teams that improve the most as season goes along are usually the teams that will be there at the end.
Impressions of how guys defended the run Saturday.
Couple got away from us but overall think we were more physical at point of attack. Some two-back stuff they didn't have much success with – we worked hard on that. Our linebackers were better. But that's one game. Got to be able to do on a consistent basis and against different styles of offense. I was pleased. Think we played the run very physical. Later in game had few missed tackles but I thought we tackled well overall, particularly early in game.
Defense's ability to bring pressure throughout game from multiple areas.
That's kind of who we are. Take lot of pride in being a pressure defense. Played a great quarterback. Really great quarterback. That kid is if not the best, is as good as anybody I've been on field with. Has a lot of talent and could have made us miserable if we were not able to get pressure on him. And he still did make us miserable at times. Will be playing in NFL.
Expectations of Justin Evans when he came over from JUCO.
Committed before I got here. Didn't know a lot in terms of evaluating him. Certainly he's made a great fit. No question about that. Very talented young man. Loves playing the game. Work ethic. Maybe most important thing is outstanding character. With all those things, that's the reason he's playing well.
Reggie Chevis.
Played some for us last year. Could see at times he had what it takes to play at this level. Has grown to be more consistent in work ethic. Technique. Has gotten bigger and stronger. Been a process but you could see it all along. Need him to be available and to play for us right now. Certainly we're happy that he and bunch of other guys are in here and playing for us.
What exactly went wrong in fourth quarter and how do you address it?
Two things we saw. Communciation problems from sideline to field, got to get that addressed. That's on us as coaches. From mental standpoint, I don't think they let up, but mentally we're playing really, really well and we have to understand we have to go finish. This team won't quit. If you've got somebody down, don't let them up. If you let them up they'll punch you in the mouth. UCLA fought back so hard too. When we get in that situation we've got to have the mentality that we're going to get it done. Going to continue to develop that. Players are not happy with way we played in fourth quarter. And we shouldn't be if we want to be a great football team.
Your team did get back up after that punch in mouth.
Big part of that is Coach Sumlin had the chance to get entire team together before overtime. That was as big as anything. Get that mental state where we need it to be. They responded. How can you not be proud? They did tremendous job on both sides of ball in that overtime situation.
Grade backup defensive ends and your depth at that position, and did they struggle?
Don't know that they struggled. When you start comparing them to the two starters, sometimes that is a little bit unfair. Don't get me wrong, we want them to be just like the starters, but to stay they struggled I don't think that was the case. They played up to their abilities.
The momentum of the Justin Evans interception late.
Lot of big plays in that game. No doubt that was a big play. If he doesn't make that play who knows, we may not have gone into overtime. It was a great play.
Was he really? Cool. Well deserved. Did nice job directing other guys. Avery (Gennesy) went out for while, Koda (Martin) came in and did a solid job. That was nice.
How do you evaluate Trevor's debut and what do you want to see this week?
Think it was good. Don't think he was satisfied or we were satisfied. We are still work in progress. For him and me. That's first time he has to learn how I am as play-caller and I have to learn his play. Was kind of like a first date right? Try to figure each other out and play to each other's strengths. So many other things he brings to table. Can watch a film and can point out numerous things in wins and losses at all kind of positions. At end of day in that position the one most important thing you can do for your football team is win. Made some plays at end that enabled us to do that.
Would you do anything different in 4th quarter offensively late in game?
Yeah I would have made more first downs (laughter). Sunday mornings I call the best game ever. I think just my mindset was I want us to be a physical team that can run the football and that was a positon for us to prove that. Did we? No, but it was step in right direction. Will be times when you have to line up and run football when everyone in stadium knows you're going to run it. Is that smart? Maybe not maybe yes I don't know. But you have to develop that in your football team. The other thing you have to do is your quarterback and rest of players need to be in situational football. Less than 4 minutes, we have the lead, we have to protect the lead, protect the football and keep the defense off the field. Invaluable process for guys, especially Trevor and myself. Did we do very good job of it? No. got to keep Chief and his boys off field.
Development of Tanner Schorp.
Schorp is figuring out what it is like to play that position in this offense. Come light years from spring. Progressing week to week. Weird position for us, not really in line guy or a fullback. We ask him to do lot of different things and he'll get better as we go.
Decision making on 4th down call in overtime for Trevor to keep the ball.
Was a play we'd been running a lot. Ran it earlier on 3rd and 1 and we didn't make it. Came up again in pretty close to same scenario. Can hand ball off or pull it. 3rd and 1 we didn't make, maybe we should have made different decision there, but Coach Turner said hey come right back to it. Trevor made great decision on it and kids did super job with it.
Dangerous to play team like Prairie View with nothing to lose?
I don't know…just the next game. That's how I want my guys to attack it. About becoming a better football team. Who they play that week really is of no consequence. Don't really talk to our guys much about the opponent, it's more about here's looks you have to block and see and throw against. Other than that just about us getting better at our craft. It's all about the journey ahead. What we're basically worried about right now is Tuesday's practice.
The Aggies (1-0) face Prairie View A&M (1-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
