Women’s Tennis Signs Three
Nov 11, 2017 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver announced the signing of three accomplished high school student-athletes during the fall signing period.
Jayci Goldsmith of Dripping Springs, Texas, Katya Townsend of Coconut Creek Florida, and Brindtha Ramasamy of Toronto, Canada, all signed their National Letter of Intent to play for the Aggies. All three will join the team next fall.
"Coach (Jordan) Szabo and I are proud to announce and welcome Jayci Goldsmith, Katya Townsend and Brindtha Ramasamy to the Aggie Family," said Weaver, who is in his third season as head coach at Texas A&M. "This is a very strong class that we are signing, and we are counting down the days until these three young ladies arrive on our campus and represent us by wearing the maroon and white. We expect this group to make an immediate impact at the highest of levels of NCAA Division I Women's Tennis."
Goldsmith is ranked the 10th best recruit in the nation according to TennisRecruiting.net (TRN), and Townsend is listed No. 27, and they are both considered blue chip recruits, the highest rating bestowed by TRN. In addition, Townsend has been ranked as high as 143rd in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior world rankings, and Ramasamy has been listed as high as No. 260 in the world.
Goldsmith is familiar with Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Center as she won the 2017 Texas high school Class 5A state singles championship at the facility in May to become the first girls singles champion in Dripping Springs High School history. This past summer, the lefty also won the Texas Super Champs in Houston, won the Texas Grand Slam consolation bracket, went 3-1 at the USTA National Team Championships and reached the consolation quarterfinals of the USTA National Champions in San Diego after going on an eight-match winning streak. Rated the third best recruit in Texas, Goldsmith boasts a 51-12 overall record in junior tournaments, including a 15-8 ledger against TRN's blue chip players and 20-3 against five-star recruits.
"Jayci Goldsmith is a top American, blue chip recruit and comes from right down the road in Dripping Springs, Texas," Weaver said. "Jayci is a lefty with a very aggressive style of play. As her junior record shows, she plays her best tennis in the big matches, which is ultimately what it all comes down to."
Townsend, rated the third best recruit in Florida, has competed in numerous international tournaments and last month reached the doubles semifinals at both the Uruguay Bowl in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the Argentina Cup in Cordoba, Argentina. In August, Townsend reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Monterrey Contry ITF Junior Cup in Mexico and won the doubles championship at the Copa Tampico, also in Mexico.
"Katya Townsend is also another top American, blue-chip recruit from Coconut Creek, Florida," Weaver said. "Katya has an all-around game and also brings a wealth of international experience to our program. Her work ethic and desire to improve will be a perfect fit for our tennis team."
Ramasamy also has competed in numerous international tournaments. She won singles titles at the All-Canadian Junior Championships, the ACE Tennis U18 Canadian World Ranking Event 2, the Copa El Salvador and the Jalisco Junior Cup.
"Brindtha Ramasamy has had much success internationally at both the junior and pro level events," Weaver said. "Brindtha had the honor of representing her home country of Canada at the Junior Fed Cup. She is a very good ball striker that has beaten a handful of top American blue chip recruits."
Weaver, whose 2016-17 recruiting class was ranked an all-time program-high seventh in the nation, loses three seniors at the conclusion of the 2018 season: Domenica Gonzalez, Macarena Olivares and Eva Paalma.
