Aggies Drop 1-0 Pitcher’s Duel to Houston

COLLEGE STATION – The No. 5 Texas A&M softball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday night, falling to Houston, 1-0, at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Cougars scored in the top of the third on a two-out single by Savannah Heebner, scoring Mariah Garcia. Sarah Queen lead off the frame with an infield single and later moved to third on Garcia's double to left. After Queen was thrown out at home on a grounder to third, Heebner sent one through the right side of the infield for her only hit of the game.
The Aggies threatened in the sixth when sophomore Kaitlyn Alderink doubled on a blooper to shallow centerfield. Back-to-back walks by juniors Tori Vidales and Ashley Walters loaded the bases but the Maroon and White couldn't push any runs across as a strikeout and a diving stop by Houston's second baseman, Arielle James, ended the inning.
Despite giving up only four hits with six strikeouts, junior Trinity Harrington was saddled with the loss. Sophomore Samantha Show threw three hitless innings in relief, striking out five and only allowing one baserunner. Houston's Heebner earned the win by tossing a complete-game shutout, striking out five.
The Aggies return to action as they host Georgetown, Prairie View A&M, and UTSA in the Texas A&M Invite at the Aggie Softball Complex beginning Friday.

"She did a great job. We just didn't get up there and attack the ball. We just couldn't get anything going or get any momentum. She is the story tonight. She gets a big RBI to beat us. She went out there and shut our hitters down. I thought two, three, four hitters for us got some hits and themselves on base but we couldn't get anything going. "
On the difference in the game…
"We both had four hits, and our pitchers all did well. They had a timely hit and it was the difference in the ball game. We certainly had our opportunities a couple of times. Down in the sixth inning, bases loaded and one out, you have to be able to get the ball out of the infield. We were in a perfect situation right there with the number five and six hitters up to bat and we ended up getting a big strikeout right there. Offensively for us, we have to be a whole lot better than that. "
On timely hits…
"I'm going to talk to the hitters about having a better approach and having a plan up there. We knew she was going to throw the ball down and some changeups, but we have to be looking for a pitch to hit. Pick a side of the plate you want to hit and drive the ball. I don't think we did that very well at all. If we gave up one run for the rest of the year and had an ERA of one we would be playing in the College World Series. They did their jobs. Defensively, we did our job, but offensively we have to put hits together. We need to be stronger and mentally tougher at the plate so we can take over games when we should take over games."
