Apr 18, 2017 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M men's tennis head coach Steve Denton confirmed Tuesday afternoon the signing of elite junior prospect Juan Carlos Manuel Aguilar of Bolivia to the Aggies' 2018 recruiting class.
"We are excited that Carlos has decided to become an Aggie," Denton said. "Carlos is very explosive off the ground, has lighting speed, and amazing hands. He really is the complete package. I had a great connection with Carlos and his family and I'm so excited they will be joining our family now."
Aguilar is no stranger to tournament success having claimed the 2016 Junior US Open Doubles title alongside Felipe Meligeni Alves of Brazil. The South American duo claimed five wins at the prestigious tournament including wins over two seeded pairs en route to the title. In singles action, Aguilar captured the 2016 ITA G2 Canada International Event and the 2016 ITF G2 Condor de Plata in La Paz, Bolivia. Additionally, the youngster earned doubles crowns at the ITA G1 Copa del Café in Costa Rica and the ITA B1 Campeonato Sudamericano de 18 in Argentina.
"Last week was a special week for the program winning the SEC Championship and landing one of the best junior recruits in the world," Texas A&M men's tennis assistant coach Kevin O'Shea. "During his visit and in the process it was obvious that he was a perfect fit for our team. I love his infectious attitude. Carlos will make everyone around him a better player and person. He will make an immediate impact for the Aggies."
The elite junior prospect achieved a 14.17 rating in the Universal Tennis Ratings and a career-high junior ITF ranking of 23 in October of 2016. Aguilar earned a victory in the latest Davis Cup tie for Bolivia in the first week of April. The right-hander defeated Justin Linn of the Bahamas, 6-4, 6-3 on clay at the Club de Tenis Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Aguilar is the son of Juan Carlos Aguilar and Teresa Aguilar of Bolivia.
Aguilar's future teammates are fresh off capturing a share of the 2017 SEC Regular Season Championship last weekend, defeating No. 11 Georgia at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Maroon & White will head to the 2017 SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will take on the winner of Tennessee/Kentucky Friday, April 28, at 2p.m. (CT) in Knoxville.
