IN FOCUS: Tight Ends
Aug 14, 2017 | Football
12thman.com's coverage of the 2017 Training Camp is brought to you by: |
This is the latest in a series of position-by-position previews.
Is this a group ready to flourish in 2017? The Aggies hope so.
Escalated use of the tight ends means a more open playbook for the offense, which makes them much harder to defend.
These individuals will be dual-purpose. Asked to block in the run game, and make key catches on passing downs.
Their ceiling is high. Aaron Hansford, Tanner Schorp and Kalvin Cline have all played, and figure to be at their best in 2017. Aaron Hansford is listed as a wide receiver on the roster, but will be asked to be flexible.
The newcomers are Camron Horry and Keynel McZeal. They only add excitement, and certainly look the part.
If this group has a big season, the A&M offense may do the same.
KALVIN CLINE

- Classification: Graduate Student
- Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- High School: Pine Crest
- Previous Collegiate Experience: Virginia Tech (2013, 2014, 2015)
- 2016 Highlights: played in every game ... made his only catch of the year count, scoring on a 17-yard reception against New Mexico State.
- Career (A&M): 13 games, 1 catch, 17 yards, TD.
- Banks says: "He's steady. He's a red zone threat. He scored a lot of touchdowns in the spring and right now (in training camp). He's really doing a nice job in all phases."
AARON HANSFORD

- Classification: Redshirt Freshman
- Hometown: Washington, D.C.
- High School: St. John's College
- 2016 Highlights: had inaugural college campaign cut short due to injury after appearing in just two games.
- Career: 2 games (no stats).
- Banks says: "(He's a) Bright spot. Best route runner we have right now at that position. He's made quite a few plays in the first (couple weeks)."
CAMRON HORRY

- Classification: True Freshman
- Hometown: Katy
- High School: Taylor
- Highlights: an honorable mention all-state O-lineman as a senior ... as a receiver, caught 10 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.
- Banks says: "A very, very talented, attached, in-line tight end. He's got great promise, and he's doing a really good job in the blocking game."
KEYNEL McZEAL

- Hometown: Port Neches
- High School: Port Neches-Groves
- Highlights: 34 catches for 537 yards and 7 TDs on an 11-2 PNG team as a senior.

TANNER SCHORP

- Classification: Senior
- Hometown: San Antonio
- High School: Reagan
- 2016 Highlights: switched to the tight end position and made an appearance in every game ... earned three starts ... first career catch came from former high school teammate Trevor Knight against New Mexico State ... valuable member of special teams unit as well as great blocker ... received scholarship at end of training camp.
- Career: 27 games, 3 starts, 1 catch, 4 yards.
- Banks says: "A leader. Overall, in both pass receiving and blocking, has become even better. He's kind of the head of this group we have so far."
