12thman.com's latest "Camp Conversation" features a visit with second-year defensive tackles coach David Turner.
Leading the way with a wealth of experience and talent are senior Zaycoven Henderson and juniors Kinglsey Keke and Daylon Mack, with each playing in every game in 2016. In addition, an impressive group of freshmen also bring skill and depth to the position, headlined by redshirt Justin Madubuike.
WJ: I just want to start by asking you, at this point in time in camp, how deep does your group of defensive tackles go?
"Well, right now we have eight guys. We're four deep, obviously. We've got a couple of guys banged up, so that varies day to day. I love the young guys, we've got some depth there. The guys have been working hard and trying to get better each day."
WJ: Kingsley Keke, he's a guy that seems to be more disruptive every day. How difficult has he been on the offensive linemen this August?
"He's a disruptive force when he's going full speed. He hasn't had as many consistent days as I would have liked. The expectation level for him is very high, and I've told him that. So he's got to come out every day, bring his hard hat and lunch pail so to speak and put in a full day's work. He still works hard but I'm expecting a little more from him."
WJ: Another individual, Justin Madubuike, seems to have impressed during bowl practices last year and then in spring ball. Has he validated that in this August camp?
"No question. This young guy has a high motor. He's strong. He's eager. He wants to learn. Very pleased with his progress for a guy who hasn't played a whole lot of football in the last year and a half. He's just got to continue doing what he's doing and not think as much. He's got a chance to be a very good player for us."
WJ: As UCLA draws closer do practices have a different feel to them, or do you guys just keep it day-to-day with the work?
"It's just day to day. Right now we're focusing on us, trying to get us better. It's about us, the details, the techniques, the little things of knowing the defense, knowing what to do, knowing where everybody is. So it's more right now about us and us doing the little things right."
