SPOTLIGHT: Training Camp Begins
Aug 03, 2017 | Football
Time draws out, and temperatures soar.
The wait seems long, but in reality – it's almost here.
The college football season begins in barely over three weeks. For the Texas A&M Aggies, they have exactly one month until kickoff.
Since January, fans have looked for checkpoints. Moments that sustain them. Signing Day, spring ball and media days all suffice. Now, we reach the homestretch in Aggieland.
The team is here. They arrive today. Training Camp begins, and the finish line to the long wait is out in front.
However, for Kevin Sumlin and his staff, they may not mind an extended stretch over the next month. They've got a few things to figure out.
Who will start at quarterback?
Will a talented, but inexperienced, receiving corps make the necessary plays?
What will the Aggies get from the tight ends?
Who will emerge at defensive end to provide depth?
Will linebacker play improve?
The Aggies will need answers to these questions before facing UCLA. They'll need a little time to find them.
The biggest storyline always involves the quarterback. Jake Hubenak, Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond are competing. As you might expect, Kevin Sumlin is in no rush.
"They're going to decide," claims the head coach. "As coaches, we don't have to decide. It's going to play out."
Hubenak has some experience. Starkel has a redshirt year under him. Mond enrolled early for his true freshman season.
"They've competed, but haven't been combative," says Sumlin. "They all want their shot. And we're gonna let 'em figure it out."
The defensive end question may not draw the headlines a quarterback competition does. But it's equally important to find depth there.
Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall are off to the NFL. Jarrett Johnson, Qualen Cunningham and Landis Durham return at the position. Micheal Clemons has arrived from Cisco Junior College at 6' 5", 240 pounds. The Aggies will need more.
"We have our guys that have waited their turn," says Sumlin. "They grow up. It's their time."
Time. There's that word again.
It'll soon be time to start the college football season. And there is nothing like it.
Yet it's truly unique here in Aggieland.
We wait so long for it, and it feels like it flies by.
The Aggies kick off in the Rose Bowl, and if we're not careful, we'll blink and it'll be Thanksgiving weekend in Baton Rouge.
So, slow it down.
Savor and enjoy it.
Don't rush.
The anticipation for the season heightens today. It begins in a month.
Take your time.
This August, Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies will do the same.
