No. 11 Baseball Wins with DeLoach Walk-off Single
Feb 17, 2018 | Baseball
DeLoach's heroics followed a pair of clutch two-strike hits and a sacrifice bunt. Logan Foster started the frame, fighting back from a 1-2 count to foul off two pitches before bouncing a 2-2 offering up the middle for a single. Pinch-hitter Allonte Wingate, was unable to get a sac bunt down, falling behind 1-2. He also worked the count to 2-2 before slipping a single through the right side of the infield. Baine Schoenvogel pushed both runners into scoring position with a bunt and DeLoach ended the game with his fourth hit of the day.
Offensively, Texas A&M (2-0) registered double-digit hits for the second consecutive game. DeLoach went 4-for-5 with one triple, one run and two RBI. Cole Bedford was 2-for-3 with a double. Braden Shewmake had two RBI with a double and a sacrifice fly.
John Doxakis (1-0) was a bulldog out of the bullpen to pick up the win. He scattered two hits and a hit batsmen while striking out eight in 6.0 shutout innings.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
On the game...
"A lot of things werent' going our way today. Give Rhode Island credit. Their pitchers were veteran, older guys, who made pitches when they had to make pitches. We had a lot of traffic on the bases. I think at one point we had a stretch where we were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The only way we get to that ninth still in the hunt is with John Doxakis. He came in and gave us a great hold. He made some big pitches to get us off the field with runners on base.
On the bottom of the ninth...
Our best at-bats were there in the ninth inning. A couple really good two-strike at-bats. Baine Schoenvogel comes off the bench and lays down a beautiful bunt. And (Zach) DeLoach gets the big hit."
Junior INF/OF Allonte Wingate
On the clutch hit after failing at sac bunt…
"Not getting the sac bunt down was devastating, but the AB isn't over. You have more pitches to win and you have to compete and keep going. I was just trying to stay flat and get the job done in a different way that I couldn't do before. I didn't get the bunt down but I did get the runner over."
On scoring the winning run…
"It's one of the best feelings I've had playing baseball, to be in a situation where you come in off the bench to help the team. Then, a freshman comes up with the single and I'm running around trying to score the last run. It's a pretty cool feeling."
Freshman OF Zach DeLoach
On the game-winning single…
"I was just trying to stick with my approach, being able to stay flat through the zone. Our coaches always harp on that especially Coach [Will] Bolt and Coach [Justin] Seely. We stringed together some really good hits right there, some really good ABs, and [I was] just doing my job."
On experiencing Olsen Magic …
"It's great, the atmosphere is amazing here. It's indescribable and we have the best fans in the country. It can't get much better than this."
On taking over for Nick Choruby in center and at leadoff…
"Choruby did a great job here and he set the tone for sure. I was very humbled to have the opportunity to be starting in center, but at the same time I have all these great guys around me that are just helping me out and staying focused on my game."
Sophomore LHP John Doxakis
On approach this season…
"I was struggling in the spring, and I went to a couple of my teammates, Stephen Kolek and Kaylor Chafin. They were just talking to me on how I just have trust everything and get it going, so I devote that one to them. They helped me a lot. The leadership this team has is just amazing."
On mindset coming in in relief…
"For sure you got to have the right mindset going out there, if you are going out there wishing and hoping, it's not going to turn out the way you wanted. You got to get what you deserve."
