A three-year letterman in track (1963 – 1965), Nelson once owned 13 school records and broke two SWC records. In 1963, he was part of the record-breaking mile relay team that shattered the old conference record with a blazing time of 3:10.7 seconds. The next year, Nelson won the SWC title in the 440-yard dash while running a record-breaking time of 46.6 seconds. The sprinter was a SWC runner-up in the 440-yard dash in 1963 and 1965. In 1965, Nelson was part of the mile relay team that placed forth in the SWC. Nelson also had an impressive interscholastic career as he set the national prep record in the 440-yard dash and the mile relay while running for Andrews High School. Nelson’s heroics were not limited to track as he lettered in football as a split end under Gene Stallings in 1965. His lone reception came against heavily favored Georgia Tech. During this game, Nelson received a 16-yard pass from quarterback Harry Ledbetter to help sustain a drive that would later propel the Aggies to one of the biggest non-conference victories ever. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in physical education in 1965, Nelson served as an assistant under track coach Charlie Thomas until 1990. Nelson then took over the helm of the track team and has served as head coach ever since.
