Groza semifinalist Bryant rewriting Aggie Placekicking records
Lou Groza Award semifinalist Kyle Bryant connected on one field goal and five extra points today to move his career scoring total to 298 and past two-time All-American placekicker Tony Franklin's 291 points to the top spot on the Aggie scoring chart. Bryant also improved his career field goals total to 55, which puts him just one behind Franklin's school record of 56 career three-pointers. In the extra points category, Bryant's 136 PATs ranks No. 2 in school history behind Terry Venetoulias' career total of 139. For his career, Bryant has connected on 55-of-79 FG attempts for a 69.6 percentage.
For the 1997 season, Bryant ranks in the nation top 20 in both field goals and scoring. The senior from College Station has connected on 12-of-16 field goals (.750) and all 39 extra points attempts.
Slocum draws within one win of Norton's record
Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum, in his ninth season, won the 81st game of his Aggie career and now stands just one victory behind Hall of Fame head coach Homer Norton on A&M's career wins by a head coach list. Slocum's record stands at 81-23-2, while Norton produced an 82-53-9 record from 1934-47 in Aggieland. Norton is one of four former A&M coaches in the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame--the others are D.X. Bible, Madison Bell and Paul 'Bear' Bryant.
Slocum improves november record to 27-2
With today's victory, Slocum moved his career record in the month of November to 27-2 in nine seasons (.931). Slocum's two losses were to Arkansas 23-22 in 1989 and Texas 51-15 in 1996.
Aggies extend scoring streak to 116 games
The Aggies extended their school-record scoring streak to 116 games when Sirr Parker raced in a for a touchdown in the first quarter. The last time A&M was shutout was in 1987 when Jackie Sherrill's Aggie crew was blanked by Louisiana State 28-0. A&M also upped its home scoring streak to 135 (Cincinnati, 17-0, 1971).
Aggies are bowl-eligible
Today's win was the Aggies' sixth Div. I-A victory of the season, making A&M eligible for a postseason bowl. Representatives from the Cotton and Alamo Bowls were in attendance at today's game.
Matt moore is 12th man team representative
The 12th Man kickoff team representative was Matt Moore, a 6-2, 216-pound sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska. Moore posted a solo stop in the first half. It was his seventh tackle of the season.
Lechler named finalist for inaugural Mosi Tatupu special teams Award
Aggie punter Shane Lechler, the Big 12 punting leader, was named one of 16 finalists for the inaugural Mosi Tatupu Special Teams Award earlier this week. For the season, Lechler is averaging 48.1 yards per punt, which is second nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12. His net average is 42.5. Lechler is on a school record pace in both categories. Today, Lechler averaged 43.0 yards on three punts (two into the wind).
Stewart Makes All-Big 12 South Bid
Junior quarterback Branndon Stewart completed 18-of-25 passes for a season-high 231 yards and a career-high three touchdowns against Baylor. In the last three games, Stewart has completed 48-of-75 (60.4%) for 583 yards (194.4 average) and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Through six Big 12 games, Stewart has completed 62-of-101 passes for 720 yards and seven touchdowns with only one interception. Stewart's yardage today was his best since he set a school record with 385 yards against Colorado in the fourth game of 1996.
"Big-Play" Cole has career day
Sophomore Chris Cole grabbed five passes for 63 yards, both career-bests, and one touchdown today. For the season, Cole has 18 receptions for 253 yards and three touchdowns.
Interception-Free streak stretches to 142
Aggie quarterbacks Branndon Stewart, Randy McCown and Thadd Hargett have combined to attempt 142 passes without an interception. The last INT thrown by an A&M QB was by Stewart in the first quarter of the Colorado game. Neither McCown (74 attempts) or Hargett (1 attempt) have thrown an interception this season, while Stewart has attempted 98 passes without a theft.
Aggies win seventh straight vs. Baylor
The Aggies won their seventh straight game against the Bears dating back to a 20-20 tie in 1990. The Aggies haven't lost to the Bears since 1985--a span of 12 games. It is A&M's longest winning streak against any conference foe.
Aggies tally 42nd home win of 1990s
Today's win was the Aggies' 42nd victory at Kyle Field during the decade of the 1990s. A&M's 42 home victories and 90.4 winning percentage in the 90s rank No. 4 nationally. During his nine-year A&M career, R.C. Slocum's record on Kyle Field is 47-5-1 (89.6%).
Brown has big defensive day
Senior linebacker Quinton Brown, who was a question mark coming into the season because of a career-threatening cervical nerve injury, played a big role in today's win, finishing with six tackles, his first career interception and a fumble recovery.
Hall is back with 126 all-purpose yards
Hampered by injuries the past few games, Dante Hall was an all-purpose nightmare today, producing 126 yards--96 rushing, 25 on kickoff returns, 7 receiving and 5 on punt returns.
