Ground-breaking for the $32.9 million expansion and renovation of Kyle Field is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday (March 9) outside the north end of Texas A&M University's storied football stadium.

Texas A&M President Ray M. Bowen, Coach R. C. Slocum, Athletic Director Wally Groff, 12th Man Foundation President Charles Mattei (MAH-tee) and at least one former player-Bucky Richardson-will join in shoveling ceremonial dirt to start construction.

The project includes expanding Kyle Field to 80,000 seats and making major additions in the area adjoining the north end zone.

The 12th Man Foundation, the private non-profit organization that supports Aggie athletics through scholarships and related endeavors, will help in marketing efforts for the expansion and renovation project.

"The 12th Man Foundation is proud to be assisting Texas A&M's Athletic Department in marketing this fantastic new athletic facility," said Miles Marks, the foundation's executive director.

No state appropriated funds will be used in the construction project, Marks emphasized.

The Kyle Field project is scheduled for completion prior to the start of the 1999 season. Bartlett Cocke Inc. of San Antonio is the contractor.
