Steve McClain and Bobby Kummer have been hired as assistant basketball coaches at Texas A&M, head coach Melvin Watkins said Friday.
The 35-year-old McClain served as an assistant at TCU for the last four years under Billy Tubbs. He previously coached in the junior college ranks for 12 years, including a three-year stint as head coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he built a 91-16 record and led the team to the 1994 NJCAA national championship.
"Steve brings a lot of energy to our staff, especially when it comes to recruiting," Watkins said. "He has had success recruiting in Texas, which I think is very important. He played a large part in the success TCU has had the last couple of years."
The 23-year-old Kummer served as an assistant on Watkins staff at North Carolina Charlotte the last two seasons after graduating from UNCC in 1996. Kummer was a four-year letterman as a player at UNCC and earned Metro Conference Student-Athlete of the year in basketball in 1995.
"Bobby played for me at North Carolina Charlotte and joined the staff when I was named head coach there," Watkins said. "He had a tremendous work ethic as a player and he brings that same quality into the office."
Watkins expects to fill the final assistant coaching position early next week.
