Lew Hill has been hired as an assistant basketball coach at Texas A&M, head coach Melvin Watkins said Thursday.

The 33-year-old Hill spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina after serving two years as an assistant at Southeast Missouri State (1992-94). He began his coaching career at Wichita (Kan.) East High School in 1988-89, then moved into the collegiate ranks as a part-time assistant at South Alabama from 1990-92.

As a player, Hill was the starting point guard for San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College in 1984, healping the team to the junior college national championship. He went on to earn All- Missouri Valley Conference laurels as a senior at Wichita State, where he was an honor student. The Mount Vernon, N.Y. native was an all-state performer at Mount Vernon High School, averaging 26 points per game as a senior.

Hill and his wife, Sanita, have two daughters, Erica and Asya.

"We are very excited about Lew joining our Aggie family," Watkins said. "He brings a wealth of experience and played on a national championship team at San Jacinto, so he's familiar with Texas. He will be a valuable asset as we build our basketball program at Texas A&M."
