August 27, 1998
Former Tyler John Tyler standout Mickey Jones has joined the Aggie football squad and is eligible for the 1998 season, Texas A&M head R.C. Slocum announced after Thursday's workout.
"We're pleased to be able to add someone of Mickey's caliber to our team," Slocum said. "He's a fine athlete, as well as a quality person. We're working him out at both wide receiver and defensive back to see what he can help us the quickest."
Jones, a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining, joins several of his former high school teammates on the A&M squad - senior fullback Marc Broyles and junior defensive back Micheal Price. A two-year starter at quarterback for John Tyler High School, Jones led the Lions to a 23-2 record during that span. As a senior, Jones rushed for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns on 156 carries and completed 39-of-81 passes for 794 yards and nine scores.
Jones played last season at Trinity Valley Junior College in Athens, Texas. He signed a national letter-of-intent with Baylor out of high school, but didn't receive his passing entrance test scores until he was already enrolled at Trinity Valley. Because he had a passing test score, he was eligible to sign with any school after only one season in junior college. The No. 14-ranked Aggies worked out in shorts and shoulder pads for an hour and a half in preparation for Aug. 31's Kickoff Classic matchup with No. 2 Florida State.
Returning to practice were running back Sirr Parker and wide receiver Chris Cole. There were no new injuries to report.
