After missing 14 games last season with a back injury, senior forward Calvin Davis (Killeen, Texas) will miss the entire 1998-99 season after re-injuring his back in the summer. Davis will undergo back surgery to repair a herniated disk on Sept. 15 in Dallas.

"The doctors have advised him not to play so we concluded it was in Calvin's best interest that he take a medical redshirt this season," A&M coach Melvin Watkins said. "We were definitely counting on Calvin and losing him is a big loss to our team. But more important, he had worked awfully hard trying to come back and this is a big setback to his career."

Davis first suffered the injury on Jan. 3 in the Aggies' Big 12 Conference opener against Oklahoma State. He played sparingly in two more games before missing the rest of the season. Prior to the injury, Davis was averaging 16.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 1.6 steals per game and was the only Big 12 player to rank in the top 10 in the league in six statistical categories.

As a sophomore, Davis earned All-District VI honors by the Basketball Writers Association of America and honorable mention All-Big 12 honors after averaging 13.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. In 1996, he was selected to the Southwest Conference All-Freshman Team.

If Davis returns in 1999-2000, he could become only the fourth player in A&M history to score 1,000 points with 500 rebounds and 100 blocked shots in a career. Davis has scored 777 points with 431 rebounds and ranks fourth in school history with 110 blocked shots.
