Texas A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum bolstered his coaching staff with the addition of former La Marque (Texas) High School coach Alan Weddell, one of the most successful head coaches in Texas high school football history. Weddell will coach the linebackers for the Aggies.
"I've know Alan Weddell a long time and I've admired the outstanding job he's done as a head coach," Slocum said. "Having played high school football in Texas, I have always respected the job that Texas high school coaches do. I'm pleased to add to my staff someone who has worked his way through the ranks and paid his dues. He is a proven winner and will certainly be an asset to the Texas A&M football program."
Weddell led La Marque to three consecutive Class 4A state championships (1995-97) and five straight state title games. In eight seasons at La Marque (south of Houston), Weddell compiled a sparkling 103-13 (.818) record while winning six district crowns. In 16 seasons as a head coach at La Marque and Victoria, Weddell posted a record of 150-45-1. Before his success with the La Marque program, Weddell took over an 0-10 doormat at Victoria High School in 1982 and turned the Stingarees into a 10-0 district champion.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity. I feel like a little boy in a candy store," Weddell said. "I'm looking forward to working at Texas A&M and the challenges of college football. I was part of a national championship team in college, I've coached three state championship teams and I'd like nothing more than to help Texas A&M to a national crown."
Weddell has earned a variety of Coach of the Year honors during his stay at La Marque including: District Coach of the Year (1991-96), Galveston County Coach of the Year (1993-95), Houston Touchdown Club Coach of the Year (1994), Houston Post Greater Houston Coach of the Year (1993-94), Houston Chronicle Greater Houston Coach of the Year (1994-96), Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A Coach of the Year (1995-96), Alamo Prime Sports Coach of the Year (1995-96) and the Nike Coach of the Year (1996).
Weddell has developed numerous athletes who have gone on to play Division I football, including three currently on Texas A&M's roster - tight end Derrick Spiller, placekicker Russell Bynum and linebacker Roylin Bradley.
As a collegiate player, Weddell was an offensive lineman on Darrell Royal's 1970 national champion Texas Longhorn football team.
