As the season passes for halfway juncture for several teams, three student-athletes have been named as Big 12 Conference superlative performers for games of Oct. 3 by a group of media observers.
Missouri running back Devin West Moberly, Mo., is Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. Texas A&M linebacker Warrick Holdman of Alief, Texas, is Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week while Big 12 Specialty Player of the Week is Kansas State kicker Martin Gramatica of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
West rushed a career-high 40 times for 252 yards and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the Tigers' 35-19 Big 12 victory over Iowa State. He ran for two TDs and accounted for over half (18) of Missouri's points while registering the second-highest game rushing total in school annals. West set the school standard earlier this year with 319 yards in a single contest against Kansas. The senior RB also raised his season's total to 958 yards-already fifth on the Tigers' single year listings. West climbed into fourth place in Missouri career rushing with 2,334 yards behind all-time school leader Brock Olivo with 3,026 yards from 1994-97.
Holdman led the Aggies to a 28-21 upset over previously-second-ranked Nebraska in College Station with eight total stops, five unassisted, a quarterback sack, two tackles for losses of five yards, one pass breakup, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown that proved to be the margin of victory for the Aggies (now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play).
The senior All-American Gramatica, who played high school fotoball in LaBelle, Fla., was successful on all three field goal attempts and his single extra point attempt in K-State's 16-9 win at Colorado. Gramatica now has 272 career points as K-State's all-time scoring leader. Gramatica, the 1997 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-kicker Award winner, is now 9-of-12 on field goal attempts this season. His field goals came from a distance of 30, 33 and 41 yards last Saturday in the fX national telecast.
