Senior Shanne Jones scored 19 points, leading a group of five Aggies scoring in double figures, as Texas A&M held off the Australian All-Stars for a 92-86 victory on Sunday night in the first-ever men's basketball game at Reed Arena before a crowd of 2,186.
The Aggies play the first official game at Reed Arena against North Texas on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Aggies shot a torrid 61.5 percent from the field, including 38.5 percent from three- point range (5-of-13). The Australian team overcame a 12-point A&M lead in the second half to briefly tie the game, but the Aggies held on for the win. A&M led, 52-42, at halftime.
Juniors Paul Jacobs and Clifton Cook were impressive in their debuts. Jacobs, a 6-9 forward/center, finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots while Cook, a 6-1 point guard, scored 13 points with six assists.
Senior guard Chris Clayton added 16 points and made 3-of-7 three pointers, while junior guard Jerald Brown finished with 14 points and was 2- of-2 from three-point range. In addition to his 19 points, Jones added five rebounds and five assists.
