Texas A&M junior wide receiver Chris Taylor grabbed a pair of long touchdown catches to lead the "White" team to a 17-6 victory over the "Maroon" squad as the Aggies closed out the 1999 spring drills Wednesday with a spirited scrimmage on the grass practice fields.
Aggie quarterbacks Randy McCown and Vance Smith "drafted" their teams on Tuesday with McCown picking for the victorious White team and Smith for the Maroon team.
"This was a fun way for us to finish up the spring," Aggie head coach R.C. Slocum said. "The kids drafted their teams yesterday and gave great effort today.
"Overall, I was extremely pleased with the spring. We stayed away from serious injuries and we were able to get a lot of good work. We still have a long way to go, but we have a better idea of what our strengths and weaknesses are."
The "White" team scored twice in the first half despite driving into a substantial breeze. The first touchdown came on the "Whites'" second possession when McCown connected with Taylor on a 37-yard strike. The "Whites" soon added to their lead when senior running back Dante Hall faked a sweep to the right before stopping and lofting a 31-yard touchdown pass to Taylor.
In the second half, the "Whites" added a 41-yard field goal by junior placekicker Terence Kitchens before the "Maroons" got on the scoreboard with a 43-yard touchdown run by Ja'Mar Toombs on the final play of the scrimmage.
Leading the way offensively for the "Whites" was Hall, who rushed for 27 yards on 10 carries in addition to throwing the touchdown pass. As a team, the "Whites" completed 6-of-12 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Also eliciting "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd was a punt by senior All-American Shane Lechler that travelled 65 yards in the air.
Pacing the "Maroon" team was Toombs, who rumbled for 97 yards on 13 carries, including four bursts over 10 yards.
