Eight of Texas A&M's incoming freshman football players participated in the Texas High School All-Star Football game Tuesday night at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the Texas Christian campus.

Running back Richard Whitaker, from Jacksonville, Texas, scored the game's only touchdown when he carried four consecutive times in the third quarter on runs of 6, 4, 4, and 7 yards. Whitaker's touchdown gave the South a 10-3 lead and the eventual victory over the North. He rushed for a game-high 79 yards on 19 carries and was named the offensive MVP.

The game was played as part of the Texas High School Coaches Association annual coaching school, as was an all-star basketball game on Monday.

More than 15,000 fans were on hand as some of the newest members of A&M head coach R.C. Slocum's latest signing class shined.

The starting quarterback for the North was Colby Freeman from Brownwood. Considered by many to be the top QB prospect in the state, Freeman found himself in what became the lowest-scoring game in the series and one that was dominating with the ground attack.

Shining on the defensive side was Terrence Kiel, a defensive back from Lufkin. He grabbed an interception on a 40-yard miscue from the South quarterback and also managed five tackles.

Ty Warren, a defensive lineman from Bryan, was force for the North as he tallied eight tackles.

Other Aggies who were a part of the All-Star squads included the North's Brett Lively, an offensive lineman from Silsbee; Andre Brooks, an offensive lineman from Brazoswood; James Milkavich, an offensive lineman from Alief Elsik and Jarrod Penright, a linebacker from Aldine Eisenhower.

These new Aggies will join the other members of the 1999 signing class on Tuesday, August 9 as they have their first official meeting as Texas A&M Aggies. The returning varsity players report on August 12 and will have their first workout on August 14.

NOTE--Texas A&M can only comment on student-athletes that have signed a national letter of intent to play for the Aggies. The school cannot comment on student-athletes who have expressed an interest in walking-on the football team as they are considered prospective student-athletes until they participate in their first practice session or attend class at A&M.
