Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum will be in Houston at the JW Marriott Hotel on Thursday, Sept. 9 to receive an honor from the Houston Touchdown Club.
The 34th Annual Touchdowner of the Year Award will be presented to Slocum, the Aggies' all-time winningest coach and currently the country's fifth-winningest active head coach with a career record of 95-28-2.
Some former winners of this prestigious award include Darrell Royal, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Dana X. Bible, Johnny Unitas, John David Crow, Roger Staubach, Tom Landry and last year's recipient was Earl Campbell.
Slocum is in his 11th year as the head coach of the Aggies and he is in some pretty elite company as he approaches his 100th career victory. Oklahoma's Barry Switzer, Nebraska's Tom Osborne, Oklahoma's Bud Wilkinson, Penn State's Joe Paterno, Florida's Steve Spurrier and Amos Alonzo Stagg all reached 100 career victories in their 11th seasons as a head football coach.
Among those on hand to honor Coach Slocum will be former Chairman of the Texas A&M Board of Regents H.R. "Bum" Bright, longtime Houston sportswriter Mickey Herskowitz, former players Ray Childress and Bucky Richardson, and some special guests of Coach Slocum's family.
The luncheon will be held at the Grand Ballroom of the JW Marriott at 5150 Westheimer in Houston, Texas. A cash bar begins at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon starts at 12 noon. Tickets are available for $35 each and can be reserved by calling 713-349-0744 or tickets can be purchased at the door. Aggies can contact William Wade `73 at 713-751-1722 to secure tickets as well.
