The Texas A&M men's golf team carded a final-round 299 and held off No. 23-ranked Oregon State Tuesday to capture the team championship by three strokes at the Pepperdine/STRATA Intercollegiate at Saticoy Country Club.
Oregon State closed with an even-par 288, but could not overcome the Aggies, who posted their first tournament victory since the 1997 Border Olympics. A&M led the tournament wire-to-wire with rounds of 290-295-299=884.
A&M sophomore Sean Gilliland finished second after losing a playoff for the individual title to San Diego State's Scott Piercy. Gilliland carded rounds of 69-73-72=214, equaling Piercy's 74-68-72=214. The finish was the highest of Gilliland's college career.
UC Santa Barbara tied Oregon State for second place with an 887 total, followed by No. 24-ranked Pepperdine (890), Oregon (891), No. 27 Colorado State (891), No. 14 Minnesota (893), Vanderbilt (896), UC Irvine (901), San Diego State (901), San Jose State (917) and Hawaii-Hilo (957).
A&M freshman Matt Lindholm tied for sixth place in the individual standings with rounds of 71-74-74=219, his second top 10 finish of the fall. Also for A&M, junior Casey Cronin tied for 21st at 79-71-75=225, senior Ty Cox tied for 38th at 71-80-78=229 and junior Matt Loving finished 56th at 83-77-78=238.
The Aggies close their fall schedule Oct. 25-26 at the Greg May Honda/Baylor Intercollegiate in Waco.
