Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum got his 100th career victory Saturday afternoon, as the 18th-ranked Texas A&M football team defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-3 before a rain-soaked crowd of 74,008 at Kyle Field. The win also marks the 600th in the history of Texas A&M football.
A&M got a solid outing from both sides of the football. The defense allowed OSU 260 yards of offense, as the Cowboys made it inside the red zone on only one of its drives. The Aggie offense totaled 394 yards on the day, 242 of which came through the air.
"I'm proud of the way the team played today," Slocum said. "The team went to work in practice last week, and that effort showed in the way we played today."
Both teams battled back and forth until OSU's first drive of the 3rd quarter. The Cowboys, who had driven 59 yards in five plays down to the Aggie 21-yard line, set up for a 38-yard field goal try, but Tim Sydnes' kick was wide right. On the ensuing possession, A&M marched 79 yards in 14 plays, converting four third downs in the process. Capping the drive with a one-yard plunge was D'Andre "Tiki" Hardeman, increasing the Aggie lead to 14.
The Cowboys got on the board just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter on a 36-yard Sydnes field goal, but the Aggies would answer. On the ensuing drive, A&M moved 79 yards on 10 plays, scoring on another McCown to Bumgardner connection, this one a 14 yarder to close out the scoring at 21-3.
McCown, recovering from a separated shoulder suffered last week at Oklahoma, completed 20-of-29 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Bumgarder caught five passes for 79 yards and two scores, all career highs. On the ground, A&M gained 152 yards on 44 carries, and was paced by a solid performance by Eric Bernard. The Oklahoma native rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries.
"I knew we could come back," McCown said. "To be able to play today the way we did means so much to me. Everybody showed so much heart and gave so much effort. I attribute our win to a total, complete team effort. This was the most satisfying win all year."
Slocum improves his record as A&M's head coach to 100-30-2, and his record at Kyle Field to 59-5-1. As the program notched its 600th victory, it became the 17th Division I-A school to post 600 wins.
"The thing I'm most proud of is the record that we have here at Kyle Field in the '90s," Slocum said. "I was telling the players and the recruits after the game that, in this decade, there have been about four days that our guys have had to leave this stadium after a loss. That means more to me than the 100 victories."
Texas A&M returns to the road next week for a crucial matchup with No. 8 Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Kickoff for the game, which will be televised regionally by ABC, is set for 2:30 p.m. (CST).
