Texas A&M quarterbacks coach Ray Dorr has been selected as one of two recipients of the 1999 Broyles Lifetime Achievement Award which will be presented Dec. 8 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The award is presented to assistant coaches who have made significant contributions during their collegiate coaching careers. The other recipient is San Diego State defensive coordinator Claude Gilbert.

The Broyles Award nominations are submitted by the head coaches and selected by a prestigious panel including: former Baylor Coach Grant Teaff; former Georgia Coach Vince Dooley; former Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler; former Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne; former Syracuse Coach Dick MacPherson; former Texas Coach Darrell Royal; and former Washington Coach Don James.

Dorr, 58, is a 33-year veteran of the coaching profession. He came to Texas A&M in 1997 to coach quarterbacks and has helped the Aggies win Big 12 South Division titles in 1997 and 1998 and the overall Big 12 Championship in 1998. This season the Aggies are 8-3 and will face Penn State in the 1999 Sylvania Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28 in San Antonio, Texas.

Dorr started his coaching career at Akron University as a graduate assistant and made stops at Kent State, Washington, USC and Kentucky before arriving in Aggieland as an assistant coach at Texas A&M. The only time he has not served as an assistant coach was 1984-87 when he served as the head coach at Southern Illinois University.

Among his many quarterback pupils are Warren Moon, Chris Chandler, Hugh Millen, Rodney Peete, Tom Flick, Steve Pelluer and Rob Johnson.

Dorr was diagnosed earlier this year with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's disease". He has not missed a single meeting or practice due to the disease. Dorr has touched the lives of so many young people and continues to show tremendous courage on a daily basis.
