Football Newcomers Report to Aggieland

Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum welcomed 31 freshmen newcomers to Aggieland on Monday. The newcomers will undergo two days of academic orientation before hitting the practice field for the first time Thursday.
"This is always an exciting time for these young men and their families," Slocum said. "Some will make the transition a little easier than others, but overall I think we have a great group of young men and I'm anxious to get started."
Every scholarship freshman who signed in February reported with the exception of Brian West. West was a defensive lineman from West Monroe, Louisiana, who signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox earlier this summer.
Seven walkons joined the 24 scholarship freshmen in reporting to campus. Among the walkons are two A&M Consolidated products, offensive lineman David Campise and punter/placekicker Timmothy Gergeni. Wide receiver Roddy Alexander played at Roscoe High School and played in the state All-Star Game in Fort Worth.
The varsity players report to campus for dinner on Thursday. The first day of full squad workouts is Saturday.
The Aggies, ranked #8 in the ESPN/USA Today pre-season poll, open the 1999 season against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 4 in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Coach Slocum announced the fall workouts will be closed to the public.
"I have several reasons for closing practice," Slocum said. "First, it is not fair to our players for our game preparations to be narrated on the Internet for the easy access of our opponents. Other concerns include curtailing access of agents and their runners, as well as a concern about the gambling issues surrounding collegiate football."
