Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum announced the hiring of Pete Hoener (pronounced HAY-nur) as the new running backs assistant coach. Hoener served as the offensive coordinator at Iowa State the past two seasons and has been an offensive coordinator on the collegiate level for 14 years.

"I am pleased we were able to attract Pete Hoener to our football staff," Slocum said. "I have known Pete for quite some time and have always admired his coaching. Having spent many years as an offensive coordinator, he will bring considerable experience to our staff."

In addition to his coordinating duties, Hoener also served as the offensive line coach for the Cyclones. Iowa State allowed 46 sacks in 1997 and in Hoener's first season the offensive line only allowed nine sacks.

"I'm excited to be a part of a tradition-rich program like Aggie football," Hoener said. "I look forward to working with a head coach like R.C. Slocum, and the rest of the Texas A&M coaching staff."

Prior to his stint at Iowa State, Hoener served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at TCU. Among his pupils were Barret Robbins with the Oakland Raiders and Ryan Tucker of the St. Louis Rams. Eight offensive lineman earned All-SWC honors under his guidance.

Before his tenure at TCU, Hoener coached three years at Purdue working with the offensive and defensive lines as well as the special teams. He recruited back-to-back Chicago Sun-Times prep Players of the Year Mike Alstott and Corey Rodgers.

Hoener coached two years at Illinois where he coached future professional players Mark Dennis and Dave Harbour.

Hoener has coached on the NFL level working two years as the tight ends coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Before his NFL experience, Hoener served as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Indiana State (1978-84), one of the top Division I-AA programs.

He began his coaching career with stops at Missouri (1975-76) and Illinois State (1977).

A native of Peoria, Illinois, Hoener played collegiate football at Bradley where he was a three-year starter at tight end and defensive tackle. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1973.

Hoener is married and his wife's name is Marianne. They have three daughters: Jennifer, a junior here at Texas A&M, Kathleen (20) and Lisa (17).
