The Texas A&M men's golf team carded a final round 299 on Tuesday and finished ninth at the Cleveland Golf/Morris Williams Intercollegiate at Austin Country Club.
Senior Ty Cox led the Aggies, finishing fourth in the individual standings with rounds of 71-73-73=217, one-over-par on the par-72, 6,906-yard layout. Cox finished six strokes behind individual champion Joel Hendry of New Mexico, who carded a five-under-par total of 69-72-70=211.
No. 4-ranked Brigham Young captured the team title after defeating No. 9 UNLV on the first playoff hole. BYU carded rounds of 304-282-295=881 while UNLV shot 299-300-282=881. No. 12-ranked Fresno State was third at 886, followed by No. 2 Oklahoma State (889), No. 8 Houston (891), No. 16 New Mexico (891), No. 14 Arizona (897), Pepperdine (899), No. 39 Texas A&M (298-303-299=900), No. 19 Texas (905), No. 30 Oklahoma (910), No. 33 TCU (913), No. 13 South Carolina (924), No. 18 Southern California (929) and SMU (933).
Also for A&M, sophomore Josh McCoy tied for 40th place at 77-76-75=228, junior Casey Cronin tied for 51st at 76-82-74=232, freshman Dwayne Morley tied for 51st at 74-77-81=232 and sophomore Sean Gilliland tied for 67th at 82-77-77=236.
By finishing ahead of Texas, TCU and SMU, the Aggies solidified their position in the District VI rankings as the jockey for a bid to the NCAA Central Regional May 18-20 in Victoria, Texas. The top eight teams in the district will advance to the regional. A&M was ranked No. 5 in the last regional poll released in November, while Texas was ranked No. 2, TCU was No. 6 and SMU was No. 7. Houston is the district's top-ranked team.
The Aggies are back in action March 30-April 1 when they play host to the 48th Annual Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo.
