Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum welcomed 21 newcomers to Aggieland on Monday. The newcomers will hit the field for two workouts on Tuesday before taking a break for academic orientation on Wednesday and then return to the practice fields on Thursday.
"When I left home and went to McNeese State for two-a-day workouts in 1964, I was nervous and excited," Slocum said. "I've been involved in two-a-day's ever since and I still get excited. We've recruited these young men and they are finally here on our campus and we're anxious to get started. I know this is an exciting time for these young men and their families."
Tyler Junior College transfer Robert Ferguson, a wide receiver who played high school football at Spring Woods in Houston, joined 18 scholarship freshmen in attendance on Monday. Two walkons brought the total to 21.
Coach Slocum said he expects Blinn Junior College transfer Mike Pinesette, a defensive back, to join the group as soon as he finishes some course work. The summer academic session has not been completed.
The varsity players will report to campus for dinner on Thursday and then take Friday for academic and compliance meetings before the full-squad two-a-day workouts begin on Saturday, Aug. 12.
