While freshman Stephen Reed finished third in his college debut, the Texas A&M men's golf team carded a final-round 294 on Tuesday and finished seventh at the season-opening SMU Stonebridge "Big E" Shootout at Stonebridge Country Club.

The Aggies' effort was the second best round of the day behind SMU's 292, which handed the host Mustangs a seven-stroke victory in the 17-team event. The Aggies couldn't climb out of the hole they dug themselves on Monday, when they opened the tournament with rounds of 307-296=603.

SMU finished at 283-289-292=864, followed by College of Charleston (871), Texas-Arlington (881), Louisiana-Lafayette at (886), Arkansas-Little Rock (890), North Texas (896), A&M (897), Sam Houston State (902), Louisiana-Monroe (905), Lamar (905), Stephen F. Austin (908), Texas Tech (909), Texas-San Antonio (914), SMU-JV (922), Rice (927) and McNeese State (931).

Reed finished third individually with rounds of 71-72-71=214, two-under-par on the Par 72, 6,995-yard layout. SMU's Franklin Hatchett won the individual title by nine strokes with rounds of 66-69-66=201, followed by Louisiana Lafayette's Richard Ainley at 68-68-74=210.

Reed graduated last spring from St. Thomas High School in Houston, where he won three state championships. An accomplished junior golfer, Reed earned honorable mention All-America honors by the American Junior Golf Association and won the 2000 Taylor Made-Adidas National Junior title. He finished in the top five in seven AJGA events. Reed is familiar with Stonebridge Country Club as he was runner-up at the Stonebridge AJGA event.

Also representing A&M, junior Sean Gilliland tied for 33rd at 79-71-75=225, junior Clay Fullick tied for 33rd at 79-76-70=225, sophomore Matt Lindholm tied for 64th at 78-77-80=235 and senior Casey Cronin tied for 67th at 79-79-78=236. Junior Josh McCoy, competing as an individual, tied for 45th at 74-77-77=228.
