Five Texas A&M senior football players have been invited to participate in the post-season All-Star games.
All-American punter Shane Lechler, from East Bernard, Texas, kicks things off with an appearance in the East-West Shrine Game in Palo Alto, California, this Saturday, Jan. 15. The game will kickoff at 3 p.m. central and will be televised by ESPN.
Lechler graduated in December and finished with a 44.7 punt average for his four-year career to establish a new NCAA record. Lechler also holds the NCAA record for 40-yard plus average games with 37 in his career. (Bowl games do not count in NCAA statistics and records.)
Cornerback Jason Webster, from Houston Willowridge High School, will play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The game will be televised by TBS on Saturday, Jan. 22 with kickoff slated for 12:30 p.m. central.
Webster, a second-team All-Big 12 selection, broke up 10 passes during the season and was a standout on the special teams. He made four interceptions and recorded 74 tackles in 1999. He returned both punts and kickoffs as well as providing coverage on punts and kickoffs.
A trio of seniors, offensive guard Semisi Heimuli, wide receiver Chris Cole and defensive back Sedrick Curry, will make their way west to the Hula Bowl in Maui on Saturday, Jan. 22. The game will be televised by ESPN with kickoff slated for 2:30 p.m. central.
Heimuli tied the Aggie school record for starts in a career with 51 and was a first-team All-Big 12 lineman by the Houston Chronicle as selected by the Big 12 defensive coordinators. He was the first Tongan to play football at Texas A&M.
Chris Cole, from West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas, ended his Aggie career with 85 receptions which ranks 10th on the all-time A&M list. He caught 22 passes this season for 363 yards.
Sedrick Curry, from Sterling High School in Houston, Texas, was a leader in the secondary and provided good run support as well as excellent coverage. He broke up five passes and had three interceptions this season to go along with 48 tackles. His junior campaign he made the interception against 2nd-ranked Nebraska to seal an Aggie victory.
