Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum announced some changes on the Aggie coaching staff including the hiring of Shawn Slocum.
Shawn Slocum has coached linebackers and served as the special teams coordinator the past two seasons at USC. Prior to his stint at USC, Slocum coached at Texas A&M from 1991-97 serving as the tight ends coach for three years and outside linebackers the final four seasons. He handled the special teams as well.
"I'm pleased to announce that Shawn Slocum has decided to come back to Texas A&M," Coach R.C. Slocum said. "He's done a good job at USC. He helped develop Chris Claiborne into an All-American as well as the 1998 Butkus Award winner. Shawn recruited one of the other finalists for the Butkus Award and the 1998 Lombardi Award in Dat Nguyen. He has proven to be an excellent recruiter having signed players such as Reggie Brown, Dat Nguyen, Shane Lechler, Toya Jones and Seth McKinney."
Shawn Slocum, 34, began his coaching career at Texas A&M in 1989 before taking a graduate assistant position with Pittsburgh in 1990.
Shawn played football at Texas A&M and earned his bachelor's degree in construction management in 1987. He played high school football at Walnut High School (California) and finished at Bryan High School.
Slocum is married and his wife's name is Traci. They have three daughters: Tayler, 5, Jordyn, 3, and Haley, 1.
Slocum also announced some responsibility changes within the coaching staff.
"Shawn will coach inside linebackers and serve as the special teams coordinator," Coach Slocum said. "Alan Weddell will move to the defensive line."
"On the offensive side of the ball, offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe will handle quarterbacks," Slocum said. "Ray Dorr has been moved to a non-coaching position as he continues his battle against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)."
"I did not renew the contract of running backs coach Lawrence Livingston," Slocum added. "I am looking to fill two coaching positions-- running backs and wide receivers."
The Aggies finished the decade of the 1990s with a 94-28-2 record. The 94 wins were 6th in the country and marked the most wins by any Texas Division I school in any decade. The previous Texas best was the Texas Longhorns 88 wins in the 1970s.
Texas A&M finished the 1999 season with an 8-4 record and ranked #20 in the USA Today/ESPN poll and #23 in the Associated Press poll. The Aggies open the 2000 season in South Bend, Indiana, against Notre Dame on Sept. 2.
