Daryl Mason, a 6-6 guard from Bryan, Texas (High), has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball for Texas A&M University head coach Melvin Watkins said Wednesday.

Mason averaged 18.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with a complimenting 4.3 assists average as a junior. He also shot better than 50 percent from the field on the season and armed 65 blocks.

Mason was tabbed as the Most Valuable Player in District 13-5A and a First Team All-Region II selection. Mason was named to the Bryan/College Station Eagle's All-Brazos Valley Team and Texas Hoops Magazine ranks him as the No. 14 prospect in the state.

"We're excited to be able to bring Daryl into our program next year," said coach Watkins. "He comes from a background with great coaching and we think he's better than any guard we've seen in the country.

"Daryl is well above average in terms of his athleticism, jumping and running ability. We certainly welcome those skills for us in the Big 12 Conference.

"He's going to really help out our team on the perimeter, and any time you have the type of perimeter player that he is, that opens up things for you in the paint."

Watkins said Mason will likely be the Aggies' only early signee.
