The Texas A&M Aggies (1-1) go for their second straight home win Sunday against
the Birmingham Southern Panthers (0-3) at 2 p.m. (CST) at Reed Arena (12,500 cap.)
in College Station. The Aggies evened their record at 1-1 with a 77-74 victory
against North Texas last Monday at Reed Arena, while BSC dropped to 0-3 with a
60-49 loss to Rice on Friday in Houston.
About the Panthers
Birmingham Southern, a longtime NAIA power, is in its second season as an NCAA
Division I member after completing its NAIA eligibility last spring. The Panthers
are members of the Big South Conference. In 45 years of basketball, BSC has made
14 national tournament appearances and won national championships in 1990 and
1995. Birmingham Southern returns three starters from last year's team that
finished 26-6 overall and 12-1 in conference play. The Panthers are led by
senior forward/center Joe Ransom (6-6), who averaged 18.9 points and earned
second-team NAIA All-America honors last season. Other returning starters are
junior guard Corey Watkins (6-3), who averaged 11.6 points last season, and
senior center Adrian Pryor (6-6), who added 7.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per
contest. BSC began the season with a 78-69 road loss to Alabama State, followed
by a 71-62 loss at home to Butler and Friday's 60-49 road loss to Rice. The
Panthers are in their 12th season under head coach Duane Reboul, who has
built a 298-65 record, including the school's two NAIA national championships.

Watkins Quoteboard
"We've had the same problems in our first two games -- we've had too many
turnovers and allowed too many offensive rebounds. We knew it would be a
tough opener against George Washington on the road, but we were disappointed
to make many of the same mistakes against North Texas. On the other hand,
that was a game we probably would have lost last season. We're working hard
in practice, trying to eradicate some of those problems. We miss some of our
bigger bodies (Ress and Slocum), especially in practice. Keith Bean has had
a slow start and a freshman, Nick Anderson, is our leading rebounder. The
turnovers are caused by a simple lack of concentration. We've just been
careless with the ball. We're shooting better than 50 percent from the field,
so our players seem to think when can score when we feel like it, and that
causes a lot of that carelessness."

North Texas Recap
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ?" North Texas' Chris Davis missed a 3-pointer with
two seconds remaining, and Texas A&M held on for a 77-74 victory Monday night.
Texas A&M (1-1) could have sealed the game with 17 seconds left, but Jamaal
Gilchrist made only one of his two free throws for a 77-74 lead. That left the
Eagles a chance at the game-winning basket. Bernard King led the Aggies with
17 points. Carlton Brown had 14 points, Gilchrist had 12 and Nick Anderson
added 11. Davis lead the Eagles (0-2) in scoring with 23 points, followed by
Bryan Lucas with 18 and Jason Miller with 10. The Aggies led by as many as 11
points early in the second half, but North Texas (0-2) kept whittling it down.
The Eagles had a one-point edge at 62-61 with 5:57 to play. Texas A&M led by
as many as nine points in the first half before taking a 42-38 lead at the
break.
Anderson Off to Strong Start
Freshman Nick Anderson, one of the most heralded Texas A&M basketball recruits
in many years, leads the team in rebounding with a 7.0 average and also leads
in blocked shots with a 2.0 average. A 2000 Parade High School All-American,
Anderson is averaging 8.5 points per game and has started in both games.
Against North Texas, Anderson scored 11 points with eight rebounds and three
blocked shots in a team-high 31 minutes of action. Anderson was the preseason
choice for Big 12 Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches and media.
King Rises Again
Sophomore guard Bernard King, the 2000 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and a
preseason All-Big 12 selection, leads the team after two games with a 15.5
scoring average. Against North Texas, King scored 17 points with six
rebounds. King did not start against North Texas, the first time in 30
career games at A&M that he has missed a start. The decision by coach
Melvin Watkins not to start King was a disciplinary action after King
received a technical foul in the opener against George Washington.
Brown Off to Blazing Start
Forward Carlton Brown is off to a solid senior season, ranking second on
the team in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (5.0) and leading the team in
field goal percentage (.647) and free throw percentage (.875). As a junior
college transfer last season, Brown averaged just 6.9 points and 3.3
rebounds per game. He scored a team-high 15 points in the opener against
George Washington and followed with 14 against North Texas.
Jack Comes Back
After receiving an additional year of eligibility from the NCAA last
spring, senior forward Aaron Jack, an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick
last season, saw his extra year jeopardized when he sustained a concussion
in practice on Oct. 18. Jack suffered three concussions as a freshman at
Penn State in 1995-96, then transferred to A&M. Jack returned to practice
on a limited basis in early November, then returned full time the day
before the opener at George Washington. He has played in both games,
averaging 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while making 63.6 percent from
the field. He scored eight points with six boards in the win against
North Texas.
Gilchrist Runs the Show
Sophomore point guard Jamaal Gilchrist, who started all 28 games last
season as a true freshman, is averaging 12.0 points and 3.5 assists
while making 87.5 percent from the field (7-8). Gilchrist scored 12
points in each of the first two games.
Bean Has Tough Start
Sophomore Keith Bean, a transfer from North Carolina State who sat out
last season, has started the first two games, but averaged just 6.0
points and 3.0 rebounds. Bean averaged a team-high 18.5 points in the
two exhibition games.
Problem Areas
Through two games, A&M is averaging 20.0 turnovers and giving up 17.0
offensive rebounds per game. Meanwhile, the Aggies are forcing just
13.0 turnovers and grabbing just 12.5 offensive rebounds of their own.
In addition, the Aggies have committed an average of 27.0 fouls per
contest.
On the Bright Side
The Aggies are making a blazing 50.5 percent from the field. Last
season, the Aggies made just 41.2 percent, one of the worst seasons
in school history.
