
Jason Glenn Named Aggie Heart Award Winner at 2000 Texas A&M Football Banquet

Jason Glenn, a senior outside linebacker from Houston Nimitz High School, was named the Aggie Heart Award winner, the highest honor for a Texas A&M senior football player. The award was presented by Texas A&M Head Coach R.C. Slocum at the annual Texas A&M football banquet held Saturday evening in The Zone Club at Kyle Field.
The Heart Award is presented to a senior who has completed his eligibility and the criteria includes intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, leadership and courage. All of awards, including the Heart Award, are voted upon by the players of the football team.
"Jason Glenn is one of the best examples of the Heart Award," Aggie Head Coach R.C. Slocum said. "He's demonstrated great enthusiasm for the game of football, not only on game day, but each and every practice. He was a leader in our off-season workouts and he's an inspiration to those around him. He's had to play through some injuries in his career, but he has persevered."
Glenn was also named the MVP of the Wrecking Crew. He was third on the team in total tackles with 67 stops which included 16 behind the line of scrimmage for 57 yards in losses. Glenn recorded five sacks for losses of 33 yards, he intercepted three passes and broke up an additional 15 pass attempts. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one other. The consensus All-Big 12 linebacker and second-team All-American, injured his knee in the Oklahoma game and missed the final contest of the regular season against Texas and will miss the bowl game against Mississippi State.
The offensive MVP was junior wide receiver Robert Ferguson who transferred to Texas A&M from Tyler Junior College after his high school career at Spring Woods in Houston. Ferguson established a new school record with 885 yards receiving in one season, averaging over 15 yards per catch. He led the team with 58 receptions and six touchdowns. Ferguson was a consensus All-Big 12 wide receiver and he missed the final game of the regular season with an ankle injury.
The defensive most valuable lineman was senior Ron Edwards from Klein Forest High School in Houston. Edwards was a force in the middle of the Aggie lineup. He takes a string of 37 straight starts into the upcoming bowl game.
The offensive most valuable lineman was junior Seth McKinney from Austin Westlake High School. McKinney has started 37 straight games at center for the Aggies. He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America All-Region squad by posting better than a 3.4 grade-point average. The anchor to the offensive line, McKinney was also named to several first-team All-Big 12 squads.
The special teams MVP was junior defensive back Jay Brooks from Killeen Ellison High School. Brooks blocked four punts during the season including one block against Oklahoma which led to the Aggies' first touchdown.
The 12th Man MVP was Bobby Jordan, a junior from Brenham, Texas. Jordan recorded three tackles during the season going down and covering kicks as the 12th Man. Two of his stops came against Kansas State as the Aggies' defeated the 8th-ranked Wildcats.
The defensive most valuable scout team member was Marcus Jasmin, a 6-4, 292-pound true freshman defensive lineman. Jasmin worked hard to improve each week and gave the offensive coaches a good look on the defensive scout team.
The offensive most valuable scout team member was senior Brian Wesley from Dallas Hillcrest High School. Wesley worked the young secondary hard in practice and helped them improve. Wesley also spent time on the punt rush squad as well.
The football squad selected Cornelius Anthony, a senior from Elkins High School in Missouri City, as the defensive captain. Anthony called signals and ranked second on the team in total tackles. Along with his on the field performance, Anthony proved to be a leader in the classroom, earning the Senior Academic Achievement Award.
The offensive captain was the 25-year-old sophomore quarterback, Mark Farris from Angleton High School. Farris earned the starting job before the season opener and went on to post a record-breaking season with a completion percentage just under 60 percent and setting the season record with 2,551 yards passing. His 208 completions was second on the record books.
The special teams captain was senior placekicker Terence Kitchens from Lumberton High School. Kitchens was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award and kicked 15-of-18 field goals including a season-long 50-yarder against Iowa State.
The 12th Man captain was sophomore Eric Stanford from Waco Robinson High School. Stanford recorded five stops in kick coverage this season.
The annual banquet honors the seniors of the football team. The senior class of 2000 will look back on their careers with a great deal of pride. The overall record for the past four years was 35-15, a winning percentage of .700. They've had the opportunity to play in four consecutive bowl games.
This group put the finishing touches on the most successful decade of any football team from the state of Texas. The Texas A&M football program won 94 games in the 1990s, more than any other football team from the state of Texas, from any decade. These seniors are to be thanked for closing out that decade in style, and beginning a new decade with another bowl trip.
They leave Aggieland with two Big 12 South Championship rings, which included the 1998 Big 12 Championship double-overtime victory over top-ranked Kansas State.
This senior class upheld the Kyle Field winning tradition with a 22-2 home record which is a .917 winning percentage. The class compiled a 21-game home winning streak and along the way defeated six ranked teams at Kyle Field including the #2-ranked team in the country, the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1998.
