The No. 24-ranked A&M football team practiced for two hours in full pads Tuesday evening at the grass practice facility adjacent to Kyle Field.
Following the workout, head coach R.C. Slocum announced that Jamaar Taylor, a wide receiver from Mission, Texas, has transferred to A&M from Notre Dame and was admitted into school on Tuesday.
"Jamaar is guy we recruited out of high school that we really liked," Slocum said. "He is a fine young man and a talented receiver with a lot of potential. I told him I thought it was a mistake to go to school that far from home and if it doesn't workout there--you would have a place here."
Slocum said Taylor was not on campus Tuesday, but is expected to workout with the team as early as Wednesday evening following equipment fitting and a physical. He will be eligible to play for A&M beginning next season and will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out this season.
In high school, Taylor was rated as one of the top 100 prospects in Texas by The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He rated as the 75th best prospect nationally by The Sporting News and was 45th nationally by the Chicago Sun-Times. The Austin American Statesman listed Taylor 39th among Texas high school seniors.
In 1998, as a senior at Mission High School, Taylor caught 41 passes as a wide receiver for 972 yards and six scores, for an average of 23.7 yards per reception. He also rushed 129 times for 1,346 yards and 15 touchdowns from the tailback position.
Taylor was an all-state selection and was chosen for the Texas-California and Texas Coaches Association All-Star games. He also earned all-district honors in basketball and track.
New to the injury list for the Aggies on Tuesday was junior defensive lineman Evan Perroni who left practice early after receiving a scratch on his right eye. He expected to be out for about 24 hours and return on Thursday.
Among those who missed some or all of Tuesday's workouts were senior defensive back Michael Jameson who has a bruised Achilles tendon, sophomore defensive lineman Ty Warren who has a sprained ankle, sophomore defensive back Sammy Davis with a pulled hamstring, and junior offensive lineman Tango McCauley with a sprained ankle. All are listed as day-to-day.
The Aggies will open the season on September 2 against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., in a game that will be nationally televised by NBC Sports.
