Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum was one of five head coaches elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The other coaches include Todd Berry of Army, Larry Kehres of Mount Union, George O'Leary of Georgia Tech and Tyrone Willingham of Stanford. The five were elected by members attending the 2001 AFCA Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

"I am very proud and honored to have been selected by my peers to serve this outstanding organization," Slocum said. "This is more of a reflection on the kind of national program we have at Texas A&M?" from our Athletics Director Wally Groff, to our assistant coaches, to the type of players we have at Texas A&M."

The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 8,000 members from all levels of the coaching profession. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football and coaching."

The new president of the organization is Joe Taylor from Hampton University; first vice-president Glen Mason from Minnesota; second vice-president Phil Fulmer of Tennessee; and third vice-president Ken Hatfield of Rice.

Also serving on the board in 2001: Paul Pasqualoni of Syracuse; Scott Dapp, Moravian College; Mel Tjeerdsma of Northwest Missouri State University; Ron Randleman of Sam Houston State University; Ken Sparks of Carson-Newman College and Ken Rucker, University of Alabama, ex officio member and chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee. AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff serves as secretary-treasurer of the organization.
