Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum announced today Pete Hoener (pronounced HAY-nur) will leave the Aggie coaching staff for a position in the NFL.

"Pete has decided to take an assistant coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals," Slocum said. "Pete is an excellent football coach and he did a tremendous job for us this past year. I hate to see him go, but I wish him well."

Hoener coached the running backs for the Aggies in the 2000 season. He served as a collegiate offensive coordinator for 14 years and was the offensive coordinator at Iowa State for two seasons before coming to Aggieland.

This will mark Hoener's second stint with the Cardinals' organization. He served as the tight ends coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985-86.

Hoener makes the 10th Aggie assistant coach tutored by R.C. Slocum to land a job in the NFL ranks, including Green Bay Packer Head Coach Mike Sherman.
