The Texas A&M football team opened its 2001 campaign with the first day of spring practice on Monday at the grass practice fields. The Aggies drilled for two hours in shorts and helmets.
The Aggies go into 2001 with 49 lettermen returning, including seven starters on offense and 5 starters on defense.
A&M also welcomes three new assistant coaches to the offensive staff -- assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Kevin Sumlin (from Purdue), offensive coordinator Dino Babers (from Arizona) and running backs coach Ken Rucker (from Alabama).
"It's exciting to get back out there," head coach R.C. Slocum said. "We've got some new offensive coaches on the staff and I'm anxious to see them at work. I thought our offense made some big strides last year, and I think we can build on that success."
The Aggies will continue the 2001 spring drills with a 4:30 practice on Tuesday at the grass practice fields. All of A&M's spring practices are open to public. Spectators are asked to stay behind the yellow line surrounding the practice field for safety considerations.
