The Texas A&M men's golf team opened the 50th Annual Border Olympics with rounds of 289-293=582 on Friday and is in third place going into Tuesday's final round at Laredo Country Club.
No. 8-ranked New Mexico took a six stroke lead with rounds of 280-291=571, followed by No. 11 Texas (577), A&M (582), Texas-Arlington (585), SMU (586), Central Oklahoma (588), Arkansas (589), Lamar (591), Baylor (592), Texas Tech (592), Rice (594), Sam Houston State (595), Stephen F. Austin (600), Texas-San Antonio (603) and Texas-Pan American (613).
Tech's Kyle Willman leads the individual standings with rounds of 70-67=137, seven-under-par on the par-72 layout. New Mexico's Jim Anderson is in second at 69-69=138.
A trio of Aggies are tied for 12th place -- sophomore Dwayne Morley (74-71=145), sophomore Matt Lindholm (74-71=145) and senior Casey Cronin (70-75=145). Also for A&M, freshman Stephen Reed is tied for 31st at 73-76=149, sophomore Shaun Helmle is tied for 51st at 74-78=152 and junior Josh McCoy is tied for 65th at 72-82=154.
The Aggies need a high finish to remain in contention for a berth in the NCAA Central Regional in May.
