With its best performance of the season, the Texas A&M men's golf team tied for third place Saturday at the 50th Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.

With several district teams competing in the tournament, the Aggies' effort improved their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Central Regional in May.

No. 8-ranked New Mexico cruised to the team title with a 54-hole total of 855, five strokes ahead of the runner-up, No. 11-ranked Texas (860). The Aggies and Baylor tied for third at 874, followed by SMU (876), Lamar (877), Sam Houston State (882), Central Oklahoma (882), Arkansas (883), Texas-Arlington (885), Rice (891), Texas Tech (891), Texas-San Antonio (900), Stephen F. Austin (905) and Texas-Pan American (905).

Tech's Kyle Willman won the individual title with an eight-under-par total of 70-67-71=208, three strokes ahead of New Mexico's Jim Anderson (69-69-73=211) and Texas' Jason Hartwick (69-72-70=211). A&M freshman Duke Butler, competing as an individual, finished fourth with rounds of 72-70-71=213.

A&M senior Casey Cronin tied for sixth place at 70-75-70=215, one-under-par on the par-72, 7,125-yard layout. Also for the Aggies, sophomore Matt Lindholm tied for 15th at 74-71-74=219, sophomore Dwayne Morley tied for 24th at 74-71-76=221, freshman Stephen Reed tied for 30th at 73-76-74=223, sophomore Shaun Helmle tied for 49th at 74-78-74=226 and junior Josh McCoy tied for 58th at 72-82-74=228.
