Slocum, Cashion & Cannon Honored at All-American Football Foundation Dinner

The Bryan-College Station community was well represented at the 34th Annual All-American Football Foundation Banquet of Champions, Tuesday, June 5, at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Texas A&M Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum was honored with the Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award for collegiate head coaches. Bryan resident and long-time NFL official Red Cashion received the Butch Lambert Football Officials Award. Texas A&M assistant athletic director for media relations Alan Cannon received the Scoop Hudgins Lifetime Sports Information Award.

Slocum begins his 13th season as the head coach of the Aggies and is the sixth winningest active head coach with a career record of 109-37-2. Slocum reached the 100 victory plateau faster than any other active head coach. Slocum won his 100th career game in the eighth contest of his 11th season, while Florida's Steve Spurrier and Penn State's Joe Paterno each hit the century mark in the ninth game of their 11th seasons.

Cashion worked as a football official at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He went on to referee in several Super Bowls and Pro Bowls and still serves as an official observer for the Big 12 Conference.

Cannon is in his 13th year as the sports information director at Texas A&M. His experience in the sports information field spans four decades beginning with SMU in the late 1970's and continuing ever since with Texas A&M.

Other honorees at the program included: Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg received the Asa Bushnell Commissioner's Award; Texas' Spanky Stephens received the Outstanding Athletic Trainer Award; Oklahoma's athletic director Joe Castiglione received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Athletic Director Award; longtime sports writer and author of numerous books Dan Jenkins and Steve Richardson of the Dallas Morning News and the Football Writers Association of America were honored with the Jim Murray Outstanding Sports Writer Awards.
