Texas A&M junior running back Ja'Mar Toombs has declared his intentions to enter the 2001 NFL draft, Aggie Head Coach R.C. Slocum said on Wednesday.
"Ja'Mar (Toombs) informed me of his decision to bypass his senior year and enter the NFL draft," Slocum said. "I gave him my opinion, and I'm sure he considered that along with advice from other people, to make a decision he feels is in his best interest."
"Ja'Mar has made outstanding contributions to our football program at Texas A&M and I'm very appreciative of his efforts," Slocum added. "I've tried to impress upon him the importance of returning to school to complete work on his degree at the earliest possible opportunity. I wish him well in his pursuit of the NFL."
Slocum made the comments in between meetings at the annual AFCA Convention being held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Toombs, a 6-0, 275-pound junior from Kilgore, Texas, rushed for 355 yards on 117 carries and scored 14 touchdowns this past regular season. In the Sanford Independence Bowl, Toombs rushed 35 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries in the snow. His performance earned him Sports Illustrated's All-Bowl squad, the second such honor for Toombs.
In his three-year career, Toombs scored 26 rushing touchdowns which ranks 10th-best in school history. Toombs rushed for 1,360 yards on 350 carries in his career with a long run of 71 yards against Nebraska as a freshman. His top regular-season rushing game was 126 yards against Texas in 1999 in a 20-16 Aggie victory at Kyle Field.
"This decision is basically made for my family," Toombs said. "I love Texas A&M and I hope everyone will support my decision. I'll always be an Aggie."
