Texas A&M junior wide receiver Robert Ferguson has declared his intentions to enter the 2001 NFL draft, Aggie Head Coach R.C. Slocum said on Thursday.
"Robert Ferguson has informed me he will enter the NFL draft," Slocum said. "I'm disappointed to see Robert go, but at the same time I understand he is doing what he feels is best for him and his family. He's been a great player here at Texas A&M and he's made a tremendous impact on our football team. I believe he will be an outstanding professional football player."
Ferguson, a 6-2, 210-pound junior from Houston, Texas, set a Texas A&M school record for receiving yards with 885 yards on 58 catches in the 2000 season, despite missing the season finale against Texas due to an injured ankle. The 58 receptions were third-best in school history for a single season and his six touchdown receptions tied for fourth on the all-time list. Ferguson's top game yardage-wise came against Wyoming with 174 yards on seven catches, including a 93-yard touchdown. He had a season-best 11 catches against Oklahoma State before injuring an ankle.
Ferguson was a consensus All-Big 12 selection at wide receiver as well as earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors after transferring from Tyler Junior College. He played high school football at Spring Woods High School in Houston where he earned the Houston Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Year Award his senior season.
"This was a difficult decision, but I have to do what is best for me and my family," Ferguson said. "I've really enjoyed it here at Texas A&M. I appreciate everything that Coach Slocum, Coach Kirksey and all of the people have done for me."
